Foundation (Prep)

Hello, I hope everyone has had a good week.
Thank you so much to all of the families who have offered to assist with our Parent Reading Program. The support you are offering is going to be very valuable for the children. We will begin our reading program from next Monday, 6 March. It would be appreciated if you could register your Working with Children Check details at the school office and sign in as a visitor before we start.
As you are aware the students have been changing their own take home books and have been sharing them with friends in the classroom. I have been impressed with the way they have taken on this responsibility and their eagerness to read with each other.
In Maths, we have revisited the 3 important rules to remember when measuring length.
- Start at the edge
- No gaps
- Same size (In Prep we use informal units to measure with which must be of the same size. E.g. icy pole sticks, unifix cubes or blocks of the same size)
This week we had a lesson in our outdoor learning shack and measured how far we could jump.
We have also practised counting, ordering numbers and matching the correct count to a given number.
Some parents have told me that knowing the sound chants we are learning at school is helpful to support their child at home. Please see the updated list with this week's sounds:
'Ants on apples, a, a, a'
'Cats drive cars, c, c, c'
'Ducks dive down, d, d, d'
'On the orange, o, o, o'
'Girls giggle, g, g, g'
'Seals swim, seals slide, s, s, s'
'Quick, quiet, queen, kw, kw, kw'
'Five fat fish, f, f, f'
'In the igloo, i, i, i'
'Lizards like lollipops, l, l, l'
'Trotting tigers, t, t, t'
'Bounce balloons, b,b,b'
'Rusty robots, r, r, r'
'Nanny has a net, n, n, n'
'Mummy on the moon, m, m, m'
Inquiry
This term we are completing a unit called Me and My Community. We have read a number of books and talked about how we are all alike and the many ways we are all different too. For example, we all like to play but sometimes we like to play different games. We all like food but sometimes we like to eat different food. The children have painted beautiful portraits of themselves and used confetti to highlight their name. Please come and check them out in the corridor.
We have started to talk about families. We discussed that we all have a family but families can be different to each other. We will continue these conversations next week and then begin talking about our community as a place where we live, work and play.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mrs Callaway
