Turkey & Syria Earthquake

Fundraiser

The earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria two weeks ago, and more recently on Monday, continue to impact our school and broader community. Greater Shepparton Secondary College extends its condolences to our school families and local community who have been affected and we are continuing to reach out and offer support however we can.

Our Multicultural Liaison Officers, Wellbeing and Neighbourhood staff are assisting students and families but if your family or child needs additional or specific support, please contact the school to let us know.

During Home Group, our students and teachers have also been discussing the earthquake and having sensitive but educational conversations about where it was, why it hit so hard and how the severity of earthquakes are measured using the Moment Magnitude Scale.

This has raised awareness about the earthquake and provided an insight into the tragic loss and consequences for our Turkish and Syrian families and those who have relatives and friends in these areas. We hope to have built a sense of empathy and care among our students to ensure we are all doing our bit to rally behind our community during this terrible time.

One of our students and House Captains, Sabah Tarsha, also came up with an idea to host a donation drive within the school, to raise money for those impacted. Our students and staff raised $1,658.05, which will now be passed on to aid agencies assisting with the relief efforts.

Thank you to those students and staff who dug deep and contributed and to Sabah for your thoughtful initiative and passion for helping your community, and those in need. You really are the definition of a leader!
