Investiture Assembly

The student leadership structure at Greater Shepparton Secondary College provides opportunities for student voice across a broad range of interest areas and is representational of the unique qualities and diversity of our community. The traditional Leadership positions of College and House Captains have been complemented with Music, College Values, Environmental, Multicultural, and First Nations Leaders in 2023 creating a large and vibrant student leadership team.

Last Friday 17 February our college celebrated our newly appointed student leaders in our Investiture Assembly. We were also entertained by an impressive rendition of ‘Fast Car’ by Leanne Luzuriaga (vocals) and Brodee Sinclair (guitar).

Our Guest Speaker, Leigh Johnson, Multicultural Liaison Officer of Victoria Police in Shepparton, commenced the proceedings with an inspiring message about being persistent and striving for your goals.

Induction Program

The College and House Captains participated in a leadership induction program last week, led by Tom Robinson, Sub School Leader Bayuna. This program was focused on building each of our leader’s individual strengths and using these qualities to complement each other, to collaborate, and to develop teamwork and leadership capacity.

Former Guthrie Street Primary School Principal and current Head of Football at Hawthorn Football Club, Rob McCartney, was a guest speaker for this program. Our students responded positively and Rob was very impressed with the calibre and potential of our 2023 student leadership team.

Curriculum Day

Yesterday our staff took part in a whole school professional learning day around the ‘Real Schools- Restorative Practices’ program. This program is designed to strengthen relationships and engagement and build a respectful culture. Our college commenced this professional learning in 2022 and we continue to build our consistency, confidence, and expertise with restorative practices.

NAPLAN 2023

This year NAPLAN is taking place in term 1 commencing on March 15th and extending through to March 22nd. Once again, our students in years 7 and 9 will be undertaking Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy, using an online platform. More information will be provided through Compass.

Morrisby

Currently the Year 9s are taking part in the Morrisby program. This is a one-on-one session with a member of the Careers Team to develop an in depth careers profile. These sessions are held every Wednesday with students being invited on a roster to take part.

Welcome Nights

This Monday, February 20th, we held our First Nation’s welcome night. Families came into the college to meet our Ngarri Ngarri workforce, members of our First Nations student leadership team, and to mix with each other. Families took up the opportunity to mingle with staff and service providers from Ganbina, WDEA Works and the Rights Information and Advocacy Centre, to find out more about how these services can support our students.

This was followed up on Tuesday night with the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse community welcome night. Our Multicultural Liaison Officers and student leaders did a fabulous job of welcoming families and sharing a meal together. Student performances in the bleachers entertained the audience. Each of these Welcome Nights had a warm, informal, and friendly ambiance.

GSSC Expo

We are excited to be inviting our school community into our college on Wednesday 1st March at 5:00pm, for the GSSC Expo. It will be an opportunity for our community to come in and get to know more about our programs and facilities more and enjoy the friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

The central courtyard will be a display of booths providing information on COMPASS, Wellbeing, Careers, Clubs, and much more. A First Nations and Multicultural stall will be available and there will be a barbeque and tours of the Neighbourhood buildings, Enterprise and the Gymnasium will take place throughout the evening.

We invite everyone to come in and get to know the college environment and programs on offer and enjoy this occasion with us.
