Specialist Overviews for Term 1

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Term 12023

As part of our Physical Education lessons, we have started by focusing on cooperation. During this focus, students will engage in activities with partners and small groups in order to learn and display cooperative skills.

Our first focus in Prep Term 1 is to follow instructions, respond to whistles, and identify boundaries. As part of an Athletics unit, students will learn fundamental movement skills including running, rolling, throwing, and jumping. Students will demonstrate these skills through a variety of activities and minor games.

In Years 1 and 2, we have reintroduced lesson expectations like stopping on the whistle and staying within the boundaries. As part of an Athletics unit, students will learn fundamental movement skills including running, rolling, throwing, and jumping. Students will demonstrate these skills through a variety of activities and minor games.

The students of Years 3 and 4 are focusing on running, jumping, and throwing for distance and accuracy within an Athletics unit. By playing games and participating in circuits, students will practice these skills.

Years 5 and 6 students are learning how to run, jump with a two-foot landing, and throw using their whole body as part of an Athletics unit. Through games and circuits, students will have the opportunity to practice these skills.

 Library Term 1 Prep - Year 6

A variety of literature will be shared with students to encourage engagement with reading. All will have the opportunity to borrow books of their choice weekly from the school library. A focus for Prep & Year 1 will be to borrow books of interest and Year 2-6 just right books and books of interest. They will need to remember to bring their library bag to every session in order to borrow. Please refer to the learning overview compass notification for your child’s library day. The library books will provide an opportunity for you to share books with your child at home. The aim is to develop a love for literature and to read not only for learning but very importantly for enjoyment!

MUSIC OVERVIEWS:TERM 1

At Our Lady's, singing is a key part of our music program, and all students participate by singing and making music with their voices. This year all year levels begin each music class by singing the Acknowledgement of Country.

Preps

Prep students have enjoyed discovering the music room this term. As part of this term's curriculum, Prep students will learn about high, medium, and low sounds and will practice moving to music and feeling the beat with their bodies.

Year 1

This term, our Year 1 students are developing their ability to recognize and differentiate high, medium, and low sounds in music. Year 1 students also explore and learn about the instruments in the music room.

Year 2

Our Year 2 students are spending this term developing their rhythm knowledge and developing their rhythmic reading skills. Through a range of fun activities using both instruments and other objects, students will learn how to write, read and perform simple Ta and Titi rhythms in the music room.

Year 3 & 4

Students in Year 3 and 4 are learning how to play the recorder this term!  During this term, we will learn about the history of the recorder. We will also learn how to play the instrument correctly and aim to be able to play our very first tune just in time for Easter! Each term, students will continue to build their skills and knowledge of the instruments and we look forward to some mini performances throughout the year.

Year 5

This term, students in Year 5 will explore the world of digital music and will gain skills to develop their own compositions using Band Lab. This term students will begin to learn how to use Band Lab (a digital audio workstation) and provide students with the opportunity to experiment using creating beats and compositions. The skills they learn this term will be applied to a video game composition unit which they will publish towards the end of this semester.

Year 6

This year the 6’s will focus on working together as an ensemble. We have been lucky enough to purchase some more instruments for our students to be able to play and perform in each class. This term students will become familiar with reading music charts, understanding chord progressions and learning how to perform together by responding to what they hear. Each term the year 6’s will learn a popular song and discover how to recreate and play it as a band.

Choir 4-6

The first choir rehearsal of the year took place this week. We were thrilled to see over 100 students interested in joining the choir! As a result of the high level of interest we've received and the practicalities of managing that number of students as a group, we've decided to hold auditions for new students wanting to join the choir. Those who were involved in choir last year will remain as our "core" choir, and we will audition students from years 4-6 in the coming weeks to expand the ranks.

We are pleased to announce that the OLPS choir has been invited to perform at this years Craigieburn Festival (4th March). A selection of 30 students from year 5/6 will perform at the festival. More information will follow shortly.
