Grade 2 Report

Literacy   

 As part of our Daily 5 component to our literacy block, students have been choosing ‘good fit’ books to read. They have daily opportunities to read to self, read to others and listen to others read. Writing is a vital part of our literacy block, students are encouraged to write for entertainment as well as to inform. Punctuation including capital letters and full stops will take focus for the first few weeks. The SMART spelling program has commenced this week.   Students are encouraged to practice their words throughout the week prior to their spelling test on Friday.

Maths

Students have made a terrific start to the year in Mathematics.  Using Rob Vingerhoets style of open ended teaching, students have been extending their understanding of number concepts. Key words will play an important role in our classrooms this year. Students will be working on their mental computation strategies through a range of daily activities that include oral and written counting and number games with a particular focus on ‘counting on‘ and ‘counting back’.

Startup

The grade 2 students have all settled in extremely well and are setting up their classrooms for success in 2019. As part of our Startup Program classes have been creating rules and rewards as well as discussing consequences. Students have been learning about mindsets, resilience and various values through a range of activities that include; picture story books, YouTube video clips and class discussions.
