Grade One Report

Grade 1 Report

Our first few weeks in Grade One have been very exciting. We have settled into our new classrooms and we are getting to know all the new people with whom we now get to share a grade. There are new challenges in Grade One and the expectations on our students are at a higher level than they were in Prep, in response the students have adjusted magnificently and are displaying resilience and effort.

As part of our Setting Up For Success Program, we have reviewed our school and classroom rules. Some rules have changed from Prep and our students have taken on the new rules and responsibilities in their stride. We are learning a lot about our classmates through games, group activities and opportunities to share such as Circle Time and Me In a Bag.

In Literacy our students have been showing their teachers their beautiful handwriting on chalkboards, whiteboards and in their books. Students began the year by drawing illustrations, participating in group and modelled writing and are now taking on more independent writing. We are working on lots of craft activities in Grade One, we love to decorate our rooms with our beautiful work and we especially love it when our families come in and see it after school! We are now working on adding punctuation to our writing, we are learning when to put in full stops and capital letters by editing our own and our teachers’ work.

Last week all Grade One classes began Take Home Readers and Take Home Spelling. Our students are learning how to effectively take ownership and responsibility for their work both at school and at home, however help with both reading and spelling from parents at home is greatly appreciated and help a great deal with Literacy development.

In Mathematics we are working on Numbers. Our students are learning to confidently write and read numbers and they are developing a more comprehensive understanding of how to use numbers. We have loved playing games in class and are quickly building a repertoire of favourite games. We are also using lots of tools in the classroom such as unifix, abacas and playing cards to foster a more concrete grasp of number.

Finally, we’ve had a great start to our Specialist classes in 2019. Our students have the opportunity to develop and enjoy different types of skills during these classes and they are always a favourite part of the week for the students.

A note to our parents and guardians: The Grade One teachers are usually available in their rooms from 8:45am. This is a great time to visit us with any queries, as well as straight after school. As soon as the music begins the Grade One teachers are all about learning, so if you can’t catch us in our available times please feel free to contact us on Compass and we’ll schedule a meeting time. Thank you for understanding!
