Year 3 News
The Brookside Block is about to get underway for the Project Based Learning topic this term, where Year 3 students will be busy getting creative in redesigning our Brookside College. What a way to get started… Year 3 travelled to the fastest growing estate in the western corridor, the magnificent WOODLEA estate in AINTREE.
We met Claire and Jono from the Community Liaison team, who organised a great program to help enlist some ideas and inspiration. They gave us some important tips and facts to consider about how to design and create an innovative, functional and engaging spaces for the community.
Students were brought face to face with the 2D/3D model master plan of the estate to inspire their own models in weeks to come. They took note of all the open space areas and where everything was situated. Many students asked great questions and recognised, that the wildlife reserved were factored in to support the protection of the Growling Grass Frog.
We ventured out to explore the many great parks within the estate, observing what was within each park. We noticed how different they each were and how it accommodated different age groups and purposes. Year 3’s made a connection to how our schools should have differences within our playgrounds to suit different year levels.
Walking down the ‘Walk of Honour’ we paid respect to the many soldiers and nurses who did not make it home from times of war, and took notice of the many different aspects of community planning identifying the similarities with school planning.
The experience shed light on the major task at hand for our Grade 3’s and how this could be a great opportunity to contribute in the design of our school. We learnt that our school is a destination and that any effective destination should follow the power of ten rule. Our school should have 10 spaces that people would love to come see and within each space it should offer 10 things you can do.
The Year 3 teachers and students are excited to get started and see what designs we can achieve. Watch this space for some functional, engaging innovation!
Bring on the BROOKSIDE BLOCK.

Year 5 News
Welcome to the final term of the year, can you believe how fast the time has gone? This Term, in Project Based Learning, we are learning about creativity and business and economics and are participating in a project called Bizarre Bazaar which we will be looking at creating products to sell at a market.
Our market will be held on Wednesday, December 12th from 2:30pm – 3:45pm. All children are encouraged to stay back afterschool where possible (we would even like some students to stay back after this time to help with pack up).
The market will be held at the front of the school (weather permitting) and there will be plenty of products available for purchase, where money raised from products will be donated to charity. To begin our learning for Bizarre Bazaar, we went on an excursion to the Queen Victoria Market, here is a recap:
Queen Victoria Market Excursion – By Holly Van Keulen and Charlotte Occhipinti 5A
On the second day of Term Four, the Year Fives went on an excursion to the Queen Victoria Market. We learnt about the market’s history and how it’s run. We even got told that part of the market used to be a grave-yard, there is still more than 100 bodies underneath it. The Queen Victoria Market was opened in 1878 and is still up and running.
We got to bring a maximum of $15 and we got to spend it on anything we liked. We went on a tour guide around the Queen Victoria Market and went through 4 of the main sections. The 4 sections included the deli, where we got to taste some cheese, look at lots of different hams and salamis and got to taste chocolates. We also went to the meat section where we looked at all the different parts of animals they had on sale. We even got to touch a live crab, but luckily it was still asleep so it didn’t have the chance to pinch us.
We also went to the food section where we had the chance to buy some food for lunch. The food section had lots of multi-cultural things to buy. The last stop of our day was the section that sold jewellery, toys, bits and bobs and clothes. They boys all wanted to look at the dozens of Fortnite jumpers, jackets and tops. Soon it was the end of the day and we had to go back to school and get ready for home-time.
In Reading, we have begun our learning on questioning and are building our knowledge of within, beyond and about the text questions. This has been supported through the reading of the text Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
We have also begun Book Clubs. This is where a small group of students all read the same text to build their comprehension, text appreciation and discussion skills.
In Writing, we have begun our learning of Narratives by looking at perspective. Firstly, we looked at the traditional tales Cinderella and The Three Little Pigs and then their twisted tales – Seriously, Cinderella is so Annoying and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. We also read Voices in the Park by Anthony Browne, which is a tale of 4 individuals experiences of the same trip to the park.
In Mathematics, we have begun our learning of Measurement by looking at Area and Perimeter. We have begun our Dream House Floor Plan to showcase our learning in this unit.
In Health, we started with Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships, with the topics of learning being Gender and Identity and Positive Gender Relationships.

Year 6 News
In Grade 6 this term we have been lucky enough to be chosen for an artists residency through Arena Theatre Company. We currently have 6 artists who have a range of different artistic backgrounds in a residency each Friday for the duration of this term. At times the artists will be working with whole classes, as well as small groups of students in the grade 6 learning area. We invite all staff and students to approach artists with their ideas and come into our grade 6 learning area to be immersed in the action.
The residency program is grounded on the idea of, “Flock” which is based around a celebration of those tiny voices and individual stories that, when combined become so powerful that they take off! The program will culminate with a large scale installation or performance which we will share with our school community towards the end of the term. Follow our progress and pop in on Fridays to experience the magic!
