R U OK ?
On September the 14th Brookside celebrated R U OK? Day to raise awareness of society’s ever growing problems with Depression leading
to suicide.
On the day the school captains and members of the health team put together a fun zone where music was played and students could sign a banner, writing how they greeted someone and started a conversation.
The Early years also got to write on a printout hand five people they could go to if they needed to talk to someone.
We had 300+ of these papers filled out and handed in that we can’t wait to display all over the school. Students also got given Wrist bands with R U OK? Written on them, Book marks with help lines as well as bananas to represent all things yellow and to bring a positive vibe to the day.
Students also got to wear a splash of yellow on the day and some students went all out with their designs to empower those suffering from depression.
We celebrate R U OK? Day to let everyone know that it’s ok to sometimes not feel so great but there will always be people to help you through whatever you face and there are ways to get past it.
“Sharing your story isn’t easy. But it is powerful. It has the power to change perceptions, encourage understanding and provide hope to others.” – Laura Greenstei
As a student we often face tough times filled with stress due to school but also to situations outside of Brooksides borders. Personally I would advise everyone to try and open up which can be hard. It was only a couple of weeks ago that I fell apart in front of one of my teachers that I trust the most in the school and she gave me some amazing advice and honestly spilling out everything was an amazing accomplishment that should never be underestimated.
Just remember that there is always someone who will care and look after you. Family, friends, teachers and sometimes talking to someone you don’t usually talk to can help. Be comfortable in who you are and don’t be afraid to speak out!
