Three From Three
An overcast afternoon could cast no gloom over the 1st XI Senior Boys cricket team, as they prepared to face Willetton Senior High School for the final match of the knock out stage of the Graeme Wood Shield competition. Batting first, the team got off to a strong start with Jayden Wood and Ben Mance opening the innings and amassing a 103 run partnership before the fall of the first wicket.
Jayden Wood showed his class with the bat once again, but unfortunately was dismissed in a runout, which was similar to the previous week’s unlucky dismissal. At the end of the team’s 20 overs, the team finished on 3/160. The team then took to the field and the bowlers dominated Willetton’s batting, holding them to 8/62. The highlight was Nathan O’Connor’s 3/3 from one over! Great work by all the team and we look forward to the quarterfinals.
Game, Set and Match
The Mazenod Tennis Championships were held on 22 and 23 February on the College Tennis courts. With over 35 entrants from Year 7-12, it was going to be a hard fought championship!
The students were playing for the title of the Junior Tennis Champion (Year 7-9) and the Senior Tennis Champion (Year 10-12). Conditions were perfect for tennis and it was set up to be a fantastic tournament. Throughout the course of both days, the standard of tennis was incredible with some fine points and a variety of challengers showing off their skills.
During the Junior Championships, the competition got up to the semifinal stage with those to be played at school the following week. After some exciting pool matches, we were left with Drew Taylor (Year 9) taking on Tom Hunt (Year 9) to play in the one semifinal and Lachlan Underwood (Year 7) to play Cristian Ciaponi (Year 8) in the other final.
The Senior Championship matches were also extremely entertaining with Julian Di Renzo (Year 12), Cooper Parker (Year 11), Jordan Ciaponi (Year 10) and Liam Taylor (Year 11) making the semi-finals.
These four talented students played off in the finals on Wednesday and the crowd support was enormous especially from the Year 11 and 12 students. There could only be one victor with Cooper Parker (Year 11) winning the Mazenod Senior Tennis Champion and Lachlan Underwood (Year 7) as the Mazenod Junior Tennis Champion for 2019.
Congratulations to Cooper, Lachlan and all the other competitors for taking part in such an enjoyable event!
Swan Districts Football Club Visit Mazenod
On Friday 8 March, Year 10 -12 students who are training for the 1st & 2nd 18 interschool teams, were lucky enough to have former AFL Player, WAFL Coach and current Swan Districts Talent Manager, Greg Harding run the morning session. Those that braved the 7:00am start, were able to experience a similar training session to what an AFL footballer would experience on a regular basis. Greg’s ability to communicate with the boys and impart his knowledge and experience was fantastic.
Mazenod College and the Swan Districts Football Club have had a strong connection for decades, and events like this help to further develop this relationship. Thanks to Greg and the SDFC for coming to Mazenod!

Ready, Steady, Run!
The “150” Club running group is open to all students, teachers and parents. Runners of all levels of fitness are invited to join staff every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 7:20am for a run, departing from the gym entry.
There are beginner, intermediate and advanced courses (distances) to cater for all levels of ability, and each day students will record the distance they have run on their log sheet with the aim to reach 150 km (or any goal they set) by the end of the year.
We aim to provide an opportunity for all students to develop healthy lifestyles and improve fitness levels, and it is a great time of year to be up early going for a run in Lesmurdie!
Due to the fact that part of the running courses are off school grounds, students are required to print off and fill in the permission slip attached to this Newsletter, before commencing their program. Copies are also available for students to collect in the gym foyer.
