YOUTH VOICE IN PARLIAMENT WEEK

As part of Youth Voice in Parliament Week's 2022 Raise Our Voice in Parliament campaign, Alyssa James (Year 11 Thu Duc) and Darcy Horwood (Year 11 Trinity) each submitted a 90-second speech addressing the question "what should Australia's new parliament accomplish?" Their speeches were two of three chosen from WA to be read out in Parliament by Senator Louise Pratt.

Alyssa wrote about the flaws of the mental health system where she told her story and asked for the new government to address these flaws to make significant changes to the lives of the millions of Australians experiencing mental illness. Darcy appealed to the new government to prioritise fundraising for childhood cancer after losing her friend this year. Alyssa said she was "extremely grateful of this opportunity, and I believe it is such an important subject to be spoken about and destigmatised."

Both speeches were read out on Monday. You can listen to their speeches below. Alyssa's speech begins at 20:15:40 and Darcy's begins at 20:19:15.

Well done to both students for being courageous and sharing their personal experiences with the nation in order to make a change.
