Italian Competition

Italian Week Competition 2022

This year, WGVPS students are invited to find out about some of the countless ways Italy has made contributions to the world through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)

Their entry can be in whichever form they choose – a video, speech, Power point, poster, diorama, model, …the possibilities are endless!

The students and I have discussed how it can link with their passions, but if you’d like some ideas, how about these:

  • download a template to make a paper Ferrari, and find out about Enzo Ferrari
  • dress paper dolls in Ancient Roman or modern designer (Gucci, Versace…) clothes
  • find out how a pizza oven/percolator… works. Film yourself making pizza, espresso coffee, pasta, gelato, ….
  • make a diorama of what astronomers like Galileo Galilei discovered
  • build a pasta bridge, a leaning tower, an aqueduct, a gondola…out of recycled materials
  • find out about Roman numerals or Fibonacci numbers
  • make a poster or Power point about the achievements of great Italians like Maria Montessori, Fabiola Gianotti, Leonardo da Vinci, Alessandro Volta…
  • check out this linkhttps://danteinlinea.com/en/10-italian-inventions-that-changed-the-world/

The competition DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO 3pm FRIDAY 11 NOVEMBER

In the meantime, any questions can be sent to  lina.hawke@education.wa.edu.au

Now, get thinking, problem-solving, doing, creating, innovating and inventing!

Room 9

On Tuesday, Room 9 had a healthy picnic as part of our class reward for being Respectful, Organised and Safe. This is what happened..

After Art, we went to the soccer goal and had our picnic. There were many choices of healthy foods to eat such as watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, popcorn crackers, cheese and pineapple. It was a fun picnic for Room 9.

At the end, we packed up and played chasey to run off our energy. There has to be something funny in our class, this is the funny part of today’s report…Harry ate seven watermelons! Everyone had fun!

Room 12 Assembly

Last Thursday, the amazing Year Ones hosted our School Assembly.

First, we performed a video game skit, which linked to what we have been learning about in Technologies. Two friends (Maggie and Sarafina) were trying to remember songs to remind them of plants and animal needs. With the help of some friends, the two friends were able to pass through the levels, with Mario and Luigi (Sophia and Orla) successfully collecting things like food and water.

Next, we recited a poem called ‘BEE KIND’, which was all about being kind to yourself, others and the world.  We encouraged the school community to join our class beehive and reflect on the importance of kindness each and every day.

A big thank you to Miss Blight, who was a huge help during our rehearsals, and who was responsible for helping us to construct the perfect Mario themed set; also Miss Steele and Mr Swan, who were there to support us with music, props and encouragement on the day.

It is safe to say that we were all incredibly proud of our teamwork and how we managed to memorize our whole assembly in two weeks!  We hope that everyone enjoyed our assembly item.

STEM Expo - Big Hit with Students

Students from Year 3 to Year 6 had the opportunity of attending our very first STEM expo on Thursday 3 November. Our little people spent some time with their parents after school at the event, also getting involved. Students took part in activities relating to jobs in the world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. They got to talk to professionals who were happy to answer questions about the skills needed to be successful in their job.

From immediate feedback, students and adults all had a great time with students getting a lot out of the afternoon.

Many thanks to the following parents and organisations who supported the event:

Megan Bankes, Meredith Drynan, Ashley Fertch, Daniel Gretton, Anna Hopkins, Jess Lamont, Adrian Pensabene, Matt Power, Curtin University,  Edith Cowan University, Fremantle College along with past student Juniper and West Australian Police - Sergeant Andrea.

Interschool Winners 2023 - WGVPS

On Thursday, 20 October, White Gum Valley Primary School attended the Interschool Athletics Carnival at Winterfold Primary School. We had an extraordinary day, and the weather was exceptional. Everyone showed great teamwork and perseverance. It was a tough day and all the other schools showed great sportsmanship but at the end, White Gum came out on top followed by East Hamilton Hill. The other schools put on such a great carnival, and we could not have done without them.

Attendance

Attendance Matters

At the start of Term 4, all our usual attendance initiatives were put back into place.

Some of our initiatives include;

  • Weekly class competition for highest class attendance. We use our Freo Dockers Indigenous Guernsey as a prize for the class to look after for a week.
  • Fortnightly individual competition. Students with very good attendance are placed in a raffle to win a prize.
  • Fortnightly communication in newsletters with information regarding the importance of regular attendance.
  • Letters to parents on a three weekly basis seeking information for unexplained absences.
  • Supporting families through our School Chaplain and Aboriginal Islander Education Officer.
  • Regular communication with families where attendance is a concern.
  • Attendance plans for families where attendance remains a concern.

Our winners of our weekly class competition are;

Week 1 – Room 14 with 94.32%

Week 2 – Room 9 with 95%

Week 3 – Room 10 with 92.61%

Our Week 2 Individual Attendance winner was Atticus in Year 5.

Many thanks to families for returning letters, that were sent out on Monday, asking for reasons behind unexplained absences.

Please talk to your child’s class teacher or Mrs Tingle if you have concerns about your child’s attendance.

Every school day counts but every MINUTE is equally important. School officially starts at 8.50am. Teachers use the start of the day to get students settled and ready for learning in a number of ways, including; fitness, reviewing previous learning and practising maths/literacy skills being developed.

(Geraldton Primary School, 2.11.22)

Students who are late are asked to sign in at the office before making their way to the classroom.

Please talk to your child’s class teacher or Mrs Tingle if you have concerns about your child’s attendance.
