Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

Congratulations to Room 12 on their wonderful assembly held last week.

Free RAT test kits are still available from the office for interested families.

Well done to our Interschool Maths Numero teams who represented the school recently at Campbell Primary School. This competition around the automatic recall of maths facts is played using specially designed maths cards. Our thanks to Mr Truong and parents who transported students to the event.

Over a series of months, students in the senior classes have undertaken papers in the Maths area under the banners of the Maths Olympiad and Maths Games competitions.

In the Maths Olympiads, we ranked in the top 50% of schools across Australia. Three of our students scored in the top 20% of students across Australia [Saffron, Gabe and Dot]. Gabe was the top point scorer for our school. Clancy received an honourable mention for receiving a five from five for one of the monthly papers.

In the Maths Games, Oscar was our school’s top scorer and Tay was the most improved over the fiver papers. Mia, Callum and Bill received recognition for their persistence and efforts.

Thank you to Ms Edmonds and Mr Truong for coordinating our entry.

It was great to see so many students [100 plus] who walked, scootered or walked all or part of the way to school recently as part of our ‘Your Move’ initiative and stopping for a snack before entering the raffle. Thank you also to the students for writing all of those THANK YOU notes to teachers as part of World Teachers Day whilst enjoying a piece of fruit or a biscuit.

Congratulations to our P&C fundraising team who put together a very successful Quiz Night at the Hilton Bowling Club raising funds for the school as well as providing a wonderful social event for our school community.

This week there have been a number of activities run by classes as part of acknowledging Italian Week and also, Outdoor Classroom Day. Our school looks to outdoor activities to complement the teaching undertaken in class. This initiative is part of the philosophy of ‘Nature Play WA’ that encourages schools to use the outdoors and an outside classroom. Mrs Hawke has put together some challenges for Italian to encourage students to explore the various facets of the language as well as the culture.

The first of our Artist in Residence sessions commenced recently. Jenny Dawson is working closely with Mrs Henderson. The end result will be a tile mural in the area of our Friendship Bench. This will be completed over the Holiday Break.

On Thursday afternoon the school, with the wonderful assistance of many organisations

and parents from our school, put together a STEM Expo. This enabled classes to visit several booths in the Covered Assembly Area and explore the many jobs that rely on STEM technologies. The activities were very interactive and very much enjoyed by our students. It was amazing to see such a variety of professions represented. Thank you to Ms Tingle and our very talented parents who put together the event.

Our new dog signage for the oval has arrived. It consists of tear drop flags and two styles of signs that will go on the fences near the three entrances. Information has been shared with the local precinct and our families regarding the closure of the oval between 7:30am-5:30pm each day.

At our recent Board meeting we reviewed the structure of our school’s two-yearly survey to parents, students and staff. This will come out over the next two weeks and we welcome all of our school community to be involved. This survey enables us to collect data and review our planning as well as the development of our next three-year Business Plan. Current members of our Board-Daniel Gretton [Chair], Lee McIntosh, Meagan Bankes, Teresa Matassa, Russell Nicholls, Ellie Walker, Kate Reid, Sam Tingle and Glenn Rondoni.

Information will be coming home to our Year 5 students shortly regarding applying for government selective secondary schools. Applications close in February. More information is available from: education.wa.edu.au/gifted and talented or by ringing 92644307.

Planning is currently underway for 2023. If you may be leaving our school in the new year, could you pass a message on to the office?

Numbers in each year level vary and planning the number of classes is dependent on the recommendations for class sizes set down by the Education Department. Numbers in the earlier years classes are smaller than those for years 4-6. Split classes are more common in smaller schools due to the need to accommodate the range of numbers at each year level.

Due to the limited availability of classrooms, we are unable to accept out of area applications. The Department approval of our 2022 Transportable room was based on the requirement to monitor our numbers moving forward.

Coming Up:

  • Remembrance Day Student Parade at the City of Cockburn for senior students.
  • Transition activities for Kindergarten students entering Pre-Primary.
