In Literacy this term we are learning to: choose ‘good fit’ books, build our reading stamina, develop our fluency, identify book features, make predictions, summarise, write recounts, construct sentences, use correct tenses, understand syllable types and delve deep in to nouns. Each day in Grade 2 begins with a spelling lesson, followed by reading and then writing.

In Numeracy this term we are learning to: identify and manipulate pace value in to the thousands, explain what makes a number odd or even, compare numbers and skip count (initially by 2, 3, 5, 10 forwards and backwards). Maths in our Grade 2 class is very hands on and incorporates tools such as MAB, Unifix, dice, counters, hundreds charts and more. These hands-on resources will be balanced with personalised electronic resources including Maths Seeds, Essential Assessment and Maths Invaders.

Our days in Grade 2 also have a focus on personal and social learning through activities such as circle time, inquiry (around our Big 10, student creed and gratitude verse) and a few teamwork/collaborative games for good measure! It sure is fun in Grade 2!

Curriculum Newsletter Grade 3

It has been a positive start to Term One in Grade 3 with students settling into the class routines and upholding the Big 10. We are definitely looking forward to a busy term ahead!

In Literacy this term, we have been spending time in the classroom library selecting ‘Good Fit’ books that support our independent reading. We will be focusing on our fluency, developing expression, building up our stamina and using correct tenses which should also be practiced regularly at home.

Over the course of the term students will be learning about the language features and vocabulary of narratives, persuasive texts and information reports. We will also continue to build on our skills to up-level words, use grammar and punctuation correctly.

Our SMART spelling program will also commence this term as a part of our homework policy.

In Numeracy this term, we have started to refresh our memories with the importance of place value, fact families and number bonds. We have also integrated the use of hands-on manipulatives and personalised electronic resources including Maths Invaders, Essential Assessment and Mathletics.

Throughout the term students will begin to develop a range of strategies and skills in number and Algebra to successfully solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division sums. We will be focus on the 2, 4, 6 and 10 multiplication facts, recognise the connections between addition and subtraction and identify which operations is needed in a worded problem.

We will be focusing on social and personal learning through activities such as circle solutions, inquiry (around our Big 10, student creed and gratitude verse) and a lot of fun teamwork/collaborative games.
