Oral Health
Last year Star Health carried out Dental Screening at our school. Oral health is closely linked with a healthy diet. This year Star Health and South Melbourne Primary School will be working closely together to educate our students and families around having a healthy lifestyle and diet.
Please find some statistics below:
- Dental screenings at South Melbourne Primary School showed 80% of children screened had dental caries. This compares to 47% of school entry-aged children presenting with decay (DHSV, 2007).
- Data from Dental Health Services Victoria, Victoria’s leading public oral health agency, indicates that 24.2% of children 6-12yrs in Southbank and South Wharf (postcode 3006) presenting to a public dental agency have 4 or more teeth affected by caries
- Dental caries, commonly referred to as tooth decay, is a common reason for preventable hospital admissions in children
- Dental caries has a strong correlation with a poor diet – tooth decay is formed when sugars from food and drinks react with natural bacteria on the teeth
- Poor diet is a linked to other poor health outcomes including obesity, diabetes, cancers and heart disease. 1 in 4 Australian children are overweight or obese, which can contribute to a range of short- and long-term health issues.
Last Week to confirm your child's place: YMCA Anglesea: Grades 3- 6 School Camp
Camp is a fantastic opportunity for students to build a sense of community and trust between their peers and experience a range of new activities they may not have had before. This camp is for Grades 3-6 and runs from Monday, 12 August to Wednesday, 14 August. Please head to Compass Events to consent and pay the $100 deposit to confirm your child's place before March 7th 2019. The deposit will be deducted off the final cost. The final cost is not known exactly as we need to find out quotes for buses and this is dependent on how many students pay the deposit to indicate their attendance.
For further information, please head to Compass or contact the school.
School Fees Due Monday 4 March 2019
Please note that all school fees are due for payment by Monday 4 March. Please call the office or head to Compass to make payment. Payment plans are available upon request to the Business Manager.
Attendance
Last week we had 5 classes reaching our target of 95%+ attendance. That means we had 10 classes who fell below this target. One of the most important things you can do to ensure your child has a bright future is to make sure he or she goes to school every day—and gets there on time. Let's aim for all our classes reaching 95%+ attendance next week.
Congratulations to 1D who had the best average attendance last week at 99%
