Approved changes to School Crossings

Recently we were in contact with the school community to advise of approved temporary changes to the way school crossings are conducted.

The Chief Health Officer directives now state that, as from 12 midnight on Wednesday 22 July 2020, anyone over 12 years of age must wear a face-mask or facial covering when leaving home to undertake one of the four entitlements, unless an exemption applies.

A facial covering such as a scarf or bandana can be considered a mask.

We understand that wearing a face-mask or covering can make it awkward to use the whistle used by supervisors.  It has therefore been agreed, as a temporary measure, rather than using the whistle, supervisors are requested to use voice and hand signals to communicate key messages to students and other pedestrians using the crossing.

When it is clear and safe for the students and other pedestrians to cross, supervisors are required to fully extend the arm using hand signalling to prompt users of the crossing to come forward (as illustrated above) and clearly say the word ‘WALK.’

When the supervisor needs to signal that no more students or other pedestrians are to cross, supervisors are required to fully extend the arm with the palm of the hand faced outward (as illustrated above) and clearly say the word ‘STOP.’

In order to ensure the students are aware of this temporary approach, we have liaised with the schools so that the children are aware and understand what to look for; and we have also conducted site visits to our school-crossing supervisors to advise and demonstrate the change.  In communicating this we ask that students are advised of this change so they are aware of what to look for to enable their safe crossing of the road.

It is also important to note the following information:

  • Stay at home and get tested if you have symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19), however mild.
  • Practise good hygiene:  wash your hands and cough and sneeze into a tissue or your elbow.
  • Keep your distance:  stay 1.5 metres away from anyone you don’t live with.

If you would like to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact me on 9518 3539.
