In Year 3/4 Maths this week we have been learning about fractions. We explored one half and the various ways it can be represented. These are some of the creative ways our students found.
In the Juniors, we have been exploring the ruler. We measured many things. Here are some of the things we measured.
by Josephine Ausilio 1/2SC
Amber Smith 1/2BA worked these measurements out.
Welcome back to s school and I look forward to teaching Maths face to face. I am super excited to see everyone back at school!
GOING STEM MAD!!!
Last term, seven Year 3/4 and eleven Year 5/6 students were invited to participate in a STEM program organised by Scienceworks titled ‘Virtual Design Sprint’.
Emily, (the science works educator) worked with our students virtually using Google Meets on a weekly basis with me. The students' task was to explore the inquiry question ‘How might we use technology to improve someone’s experience in lockdown?’ They worked individually or in a team on a six-week project of exploration, discovery, imagination, creativity and reflection to design and develop a prototype of their idea to answer this inquiry question.
As part of this process they also had to produce a 90-second video pitch showcasing their prototype, explaining its function and for whom this prototype would benefit during lockdown. They used a variety of technological devices and programs such as Marvel App, Co-Spacer Co, i-Movie and Scratch to achieve their goal.
A panel of four judges (Mrs Watson, Mr Jennings, Mr Frazzetto and Emily the scienceworks educator) viewed twelve of the students’ video pitches and ranked them using a selection criteria. They were all terrific and very impressive however, we could only select only four.
The four designs and their video pitch have now been nominated as finalists by curators from Catholic Education Melbourne, Melbourne Museum and Melbourne Zoo to enter the Catholic Education Melbourne STEM Mad 2020 Showcase.
Our students will represent St Fidelis School with 200 other Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools this year in the VIRTUAL STEM MAD SHOWCASE - October 27th due to COVID-19.
This is an amazing and exciting achievement for the 4 students, their families and our school community. I would like to congratulate:
You are able to view their pitch video by clicking on the images below.
We wish them all the best and success in the coming weeks. The winners will be announced on Tuesday 27th of October 2020 virtually by video link. Here is the link if you would like to know more information regarding STEM MAD Goes Digital 2020.
All the students who contributed to the STEM program will present and display their brilliant ideas at our own ST FIDELIS STEM MAD SHOWCASE in early November.
St Fidelis’ families will be able to virtually view our young future Scientists’, Technicians’, Engineers’ and Mathematicians’ amazing and incredible designs and inventions! Well done we are proud of all the students' achievements!
Count Us In – 2020 - November 5th
We may not be able to come together as a school and we may not be able to sing but we can still join with our class and join in using body percussion and the Auslan Sign language. So we will continue our preparation for joining in the special event.
Whole School Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday, November 20 - this event will be held at school if we are unable to attend Shore Reserve.
All the students viewed the Bible story of 'CREATION'. All the students from F - 6 were asked to interpret the Creation story in any art form they would like to show their visual expression of creation. Here are a few of our students' visual interpretations of the 'Creation' story.
