STEAM

STEAM

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. At Melbourne Girls’ College, this program began in 2016. In STEAM, we strive to help students acquire the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the 21st Century. Critical thinking, collaborative and communication skills and creativity are all necessary skills of our generation.

Students can participate in many activities such as coding, robotics, 3D printing and drawing, green screen technology, virtual reality experiences and much more during these meetings. Activities and events outside of these lunchtimes are also open to the entire student body. Opportunities available throughout the year to take part in competitions with a STEAM theme. Students can decide to opt for 3D printing challenges, designing experiments for the International Space Station, designing settlements in outer space, coding competitions and industry talks. Every two years students are given a chance to go to Space Camp at the Kennedy Space Centre in Orlando, Florida, America.

Science club is a separate club focusing on the Science aspect of STEAM. Weekly meetings are also held for Science club during Friday lunchtime. Science Club is mainly student run; that is, we bring our own ideas of what we would like to do for this meeting and the upcoming ones. We do everything from experiments to learning about intriguing science topics. The Science club also organises activities for the yearly Science Week and more Science celebrations throughout the year.
