Writing Competitions and Debating

Writing Competitions

Writing competitions are offered to all students at MGC. Some of the competitions include the Slade Writing Competition and the Insight Creative Writing Competition in which students write a piece on a chosen particular topic or theme. It is a great opportunity to enhance writing skills such as creativity, originality, fluency, enthusiasm and appeal.

Debating

The MGC Debating Program is offered with The Debaters’ Association of Victorian Schools Competition, the largest organised debating competition in the world. Coaching and preparation are done at school two weeks leading up to the debate. Debating coaches from The University of Melbourne assist students with their preparation. The debates are held in the evening, and last about an hour. Teams consist of 5-7 members but for each debate there are 3 speakers. Although not all students speak at each debate, everyone on the team is very involved as they support their team and attend all coaching sessions. Debating is a great opportunity that students can be involved in at MGC as is creates leaders, critical thinkers enhances presentation skills and so much more!
