Camp is finally upon us! By the time you read this article we will have well and truly settled into
Camp Coonawarra which will be our home for the next five days. Students were very excited this morning as they wheeled their suitcases and other belongings before embarking on the bus. The Coonawarra Farm Resort Camp has been the topic of excited discussion certainly last week and during last term. The camp experience provides opportunities for students to build upon skills such as collaboration when working as part of a team, challenging themselves by trying new activities they wouldn’t have the opportunity to try at home, building their resilience and consolidating and forming relationships with their peers. We look forward to sharing the many exciting experiences that the students will participate in via Instagram, so stay-tuned! We will be returning to school on Friday 18th October at 3:30pm. We will confirm the arrival time on Friday via Instagram. The packing list has been added to Google Classroom if you need another copy. We will be leaving school at 9:15am but ask that students arrive at school by 8:45am (no earlier please).
In Mathematics, students have been working on plotting and recording
coordinates on the Cartesian Plane. To cater to a range of learning styles a Cartesian Plane was constructed outside on the oval. Students threw a ball onto the Cartesian Plane and placed a cone where it landed. They then recorded everyone's cone coordinates into their maths books. Feedback from the students about this hands-on activity was very positive. In another class, students had to say what coordinate they wanted their counter to land on before flicking it onto the Cartesian Plane. After plotting the coordinates students then applied their understanding and skills by working through star tasks which were differentiated to meet the learning needs of all students.
In English, students have been investigating and analysing a range of Information Reports. In the introductory session students wrote 6 noticings and 3 wonderings onto a noughts and crosses template. This was then turned into a game of bingo. Students have been focusing on topic sentences and why they are so important and have experimented with writing their own and aiming to up-level them to ensure that they are engaging and purposeful.
In the S.T.E.M. session last week students designed and built a shock
absorbing system that would keep a spaceman safe when dropped from a height. Students used their given materials to connect their cup (containing their ‘spaceman’) to a paper plate in a way that would absorb the shock when dropped. It was great to see students collaborating, taking risks and challenging themselves in their learning.
We congratulate the students that represented MPRPS last week at the Division Athletics Competition. Students returned to school very excited about their performaces and participation and we wish Usman and Maddie B the best of luck when they represent our school at the regional level of competition.
Student Voice
“I liked that we could do maths outside and learn in a different environment and way,” Kieran
“I liked that we had to create our own design because we had no photos to copy from. This made me think harder and use the character strength of creativity,’ Sybel
Reminders
- Graduation- there are quite a few students that still haven’t brought their 3 toddler/baby photos to school. Can you please ensure that these are brought to school by next week (either in an envelope, on USB or emailed to Mr Shaw (shaw.andrew.w@edumail.vic.gov.au)).
- We are also requiring school photos (individual photos) from students that attended other schools before coming to MPRPS. Thank you.
