Book Week

Thank you to Aviva who was our guest during book week to share the books she has been part of publishing as a co author and illustrator.

Aviva read our Year One/Two and Three/Four classes. She read the third book in the Small Friends Books series "Nema and the Xenos, A Story of Soil Cycles. Written by Ailsa Wild, illustrated by Aviva Reed and created by Gregory Crocetti and Briony Barr. Published by CSIRO Publishing.

Together, Small Friends Books have published three books: "The Squid, the Vibrio & the Moon", "Zobi and the Zoox" and "Nema and the Xenoes". Aviva has personally authored and illustrated EON. The Story of the Fossils.

Students created microscopic images from the book by looking at the details of the illustrations.

It was great to celebrate the many talents of our staff and share the excitement of books and learning during Book Week.

Popcorn Stall

We are working to extend our opportunities for students across the school to show their leadership skills by organising and participating in events beyond the classroom.  Students often suggest ideas for fundraising, supporting charities and social events for the school. In order to have an idea be approved students must complete a proposal and have it approved by Leon or Megan.  They also have to prepare and organise the event independently to develop these skills. Well Done to Django and Harry along with peers set up and ran a Book Week Popcorn stall to raise money for sports equipment. Django and Harry raised $116.00 during this lunch time.  They would like to thank Deb for supervising and cooking the popcorn.

Popcorn has proved to be so popular that on a Friday each week the Year Six students will continue to sell popcorn at $1 to raise money for their end of year functions.

Auslan Classes

Thornbury Primary School will be offering Australian Sign Language (Auslan), through Auslan Consultancy, classes for parents and staff during Term 4. Auslan is the language used by Deaf people and is a visual language. These classes will be for beginners who would like to learn how to communicate with deaf people in a basic way.

The SurveyMonkey results showed that many of you would also like concurrent classes for children, but Auslan Consultancy has been unable to find a teacher available to teach children at this time. We aim to provide more classes next year if there is continuing demand.

We will offer one adult class on Mondays from 4-5.30. This class will run dependent on a minimum number of enrolments. Classes will run for 8 weeks starting on Monday 7 October and finishing on 26 November, and will cost $100 per person

The costs is $100 per adult. Please note that upfront payment for the term is required (if the classes do not proceed, you will be reimbursed your money as soon as possible).
