Sport Development Leader

Sport teaches you character; it teaches you to play by the rules; it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose; it teaches you about life

Billie Jean King

Sport at our college is thriving at present - the quote above could not sum up our position any better.  Our students are learning valuable lessons - we had nine teams on the podium last term, learning how good it felt to be at the top of their game; we had three teams just miss out and learn the hard lesson on life when you just miss your goal but thankfully we had no teams on the bottom of the table dealing with the emotion of loss.

At the end of each term our teams are measured by how they performed over the season against the CaSSSA schools - an objective number based on games won or lost.  What is more important is the subjective measure on growth, skill development, and enjoyment.  These are, to me, the more important values that sport can offer.  More often than not, if the subjective lessons are positive, the objective result is also positive.

With the Term 1 competition now complete, we start this week on Term 2.   In the process of change to a four-term sport model it has been tough to fit trials around existing sports, but we will have nineteen teams in Hockey, Netball, Touch, and Volleyball out flying the Mount Alvernia College badge with pride.  We wish them the best of luck for the season.

Our Interhouse Cross Country suffered at the hands of our last COVID lockdown.  We are looking to set a new date for this important college event.  In the meantime we have already started our CaSSSA team trials, with students training twice weekly as well as attending inter-school meets.  As always, we welcome more runners to fill this team.  We can take up to ten runners in each age category to the inter-school event at Limestone Park on 28 May.

Our Futsal teams are on the move and, as you read this, they will be battling it out for a position at the State Championships.  We have five teams this year, and hope to put a few through to the next level.

We have some other success stories also as you flick through the following pages.

Enjoy and stay active!
