Yellow Day

Next Tuesday, 4 May, we will be holding Yellow Day, along with Padua, Molly’s House (child care centre), and Delamore Retirement Community.  Our aim is to raise awareness of childhood cancer and, in doing so, support fellow Mt A student Megan Reid’s RedKite fundraiser.  Students were handed yellow wristbands with Megan’s hashtag (#teammeganstrong🎗) at Assembly today, which they may wear for the rest of the term.  On the day, students may wear yellow with no cost; however, there will be ribbons, face paint in the Undercroft, and baked goods, lollies, scrunchies, and more available to purchase in Francis Court, so be sure to bring some cash!  We hope you can support this fantastic cause!

Hi, Guys!  My name is Megan Reid, I am a Year 12 student at Mount Alvernia and I am currently fighting cancer for the second time.

I was first diagnosed in November 2019 with Classical Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.  Since then, I have been through ten cycles of chemotherapy, nine hospital admissions, five biopsies, one relapse, one stem cell transplant (which I am currently in the middle of), and countless blood tests, scans, failed treatments, and more.

I am currently in hospital having a stem cell transplant with my little sister, Erin, as my donor.  So far this stem cell transplant has been the most hard and painful thing I have ever experienced.  Hopefully next week my new stem cells will start to engraft and then I will start to feel better.  If you would like to read more about my story you can read it here: https://www.leukaemia.org.au/stories/high-schooler-megan-faces-biggest-test-yet/

After I finished treatment in April 2020, I started to become more open about my cancer journey and raise money.  I started my tiktok (@megan.the.cancer.kid), where I now have over 100,000 followers.  I bring people along on my journey and educate them on what it is like being a teenager with cancer.  Last year in October I participated in Light the Night by Leukaemia Foundation, where I raised over $3000 to help blood cancer patients like myself.

Now I am looking forward to Yellow Day where we will be supporting the charity Redkite. Redkite is a childhood cancer charity which provides Redkite bags, educational grants, Dare to Dream scholarships, counselling, grocery vouchers, and so much more to children fighting cancer and their families.

I myself received a Redkite bag at the start of my treatment which was full of great resources and goodies to help me through hospital admissions, an educational grant which we used to pay for my tutoring last year, and grocery vouchers which my family have found very helpful.  My family and I still continue to use Redkite’s services to help us through my treatment now.

Money raised through Yellow Day will go towards helping kids like me and it will help make a difficult and hard time a little easier.  Your money will go towards things like Redkite bags, educational grants, Dare to Dream scholarships, and grocery vouchers.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this; I really hope that you will participate in Yellow Day to show your support for me and other children fighting cancer in our community as well as to help raise money for Redkite.
