From the Chaplain

Today I sit in my office and catch up on some work and write this reflection. I have my beautiful smelling candle alight and it reminds me that Jesus is the light of the world. This Easter we remember that Jesus died for us and rose again to be the light of the world.

John 8:12 says, ‘When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” Every chapel service here at GSG we light a candle at the beginning and say this bible verse, to remind us that Jesus is with us and that he is the light.  But what does this really mean?

Natural light shows us the way, it helps us to grow and is good for our mental health.  Jesus said he is the light, that this is a part of who he is. Revelation 22:5 tells us that in heaven there shall be no more night, and they will not need lamps or sunlight, because the Lord God will be their light. Jesus can be related to natural light, showing us the way, helping us grow and being good for mental health. It is argued that we need light to survive as humans and I definitely need Jesus to survive this life, as without him I would be very lost.

Jesus also said that not only is he the light, but we need to be the light too and reflect the light of Christ to others by telling them about the Gospel and showing care and compassion. So this Easter light a candle to remind your family about the significance of Christ in our world today.  When you blow out the candle, remember that you take the light of Christ with you wherever you go.
