SUPREME COURT INCURSION

LEGAL STUDIES

Year 10, 11 and 12 Legal Studies were treated to an information session about the Supreme Court with the Honourable Justice Tim Ginnane.  Honourable Justice Tim Ginanne explained the role of the Supreme Court, how he became a judge and gave students a real life incite into legal cases he had presided over. Students were given the opportunity to ask the Justice their own questions and Justice Ginanne was very impressed with the students. He also gave them insight into a case that went to the High Court where in 1903 there was industrial action in the Victorian coalfields which lasted for about 70 weeks, initially beginning at Outtrim, Victoria before spreading to Jumbunna Coal Mine in Victoria. This resulted in setting the precedent for workplace legislation and trade law, whereby unions in one state could call a national strike.
