ATHLETICS DAY
Cloudy skies and mild temperatures greeted KSC athletes on April 18th, for the legendary House Athletics Day. House meetings helped students to understand the format and expectations for the day, as a refresher for older students, and as new information for our Years 7 and 8 students who have not yet had a chance to participate, due to our circumstances this time last year.
Students convened on the oval at their house tents and competition was underway swiftly.
The first steal of the program occurred in the 800m with the senior boys, who ran steadily behind Jay Walker, who led the way until the last 200 metres, where Corey Whelan had been saving fuel in the tank for a sprint to finish first. The tactician had nearly everyone believing that last year's Cross Country record-breaker had lost his form and lessons were learned by those paying attention to the race!
Oliviah Joyce blitzed the field in the 100m to finish an easy first, and Saffron Rumbold proved that she can switch technique successfully from her long distance form to sprint home for a blue ribbon.
Over in the field events, the Triple Jump pit saw several strong performances, including Alex Blackmore, Harrison Clark, Natalie Churchill, and Lachie Wilson, who also dominated in the Long Jump. Charlie Carew impressed with his javelin throw in the 16 Boys, after a more low key discus effort earlier, and admitting that the javelin was the event he intended to contest with greater focus.
Bailey Mitchard schooled us with a hurdle performance, at the senior end, as well as with Long Jump, whilst Cooper Woolfe held up the Middle School end with a standout performance in the 100m hurdles.
100 metres does not seem like much until it is hotly contested by the Champions for the sprint and the tense contest between Paige Mitchard and Hayley Woollard was proof of that, with Hayley taking the win.
When 100 metres are multiplied by four and shared between a relay team, the outcomes can be unexpected and astonishing. The 14 Boys relay was decided by a toe between Tanner Walker and Colby Rumbold, with Tanner's stride claiming the advantage over Colby's mighty sprint.
Whilst this report has celebrated the wins, there must be recognition of those who made big efforts and did not receive a ribbon. Very new student, Elita Chrisafis participated in as many events as possible and put in an outstanding effort, noted by several spectators.
Additionally, despite initially turning down an invitation to race with the 13 Boys in the relay, Dylan Morrow stepped up to assist a second place for his team. Rhiannon Rawlins encouraged Shayla Rose to run the 100m and supported by Brodie Hall, they made it to the line-up and had a fun run down the straight to finish last and second last, smiling all the way.
As teachers, we watch our students performing outside of the classroom and it gives us another perspective; watching you and your results achieved.
