3 students in Darebin’s Young Citizen Jury

The Jury was established in 2017 as a way for young people to provide recommendations to Darebin Council, and other relevant bodies, on what Darebin young people want and need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. The Jury enables young people to contribute to Council’s decision making about issues that directly affect them and have a voice about possible solutions. Twenty active young people currently make up the Jury; 10 identify as male, 10 identify as female. The average age of members is 17 years of age; youngest member being 14 years, the oldest being 25 years. All members either live, work or study in Darebin. We have three students in this year’s jury – Rosie Thyer (Yr 11), Marco Bellemo (Yr 12) and Charlie Faubel (Yr 12). Congratulations to all three.

State Soccer representation

Rosie Thyer has also been selected to play in the State Squad for Soccer. Well done Rosie!

Music Nights - Jazz; Strings and Vocals

The Music team recently put on another two fabulous evenings with high-quality performances from all our ensembles - see details and photos in this newsletter. I was proud to see the Brian Brown Award presented to Josh Dulfer and Ezra Blaikie, and to present Angus Buick with his award from Generations in Jazz.  Thank you to all the music staff for their work with students across the year and in preparation for these performances. They were wonderful, high calibre events.

Boho South Campus Consultation

Tanya Burdett has been at quite a number of Listening Posts at school events. Parent-Student-Teacher Conversations at the end of Term, are the only remaining opportunities for that.

  • Parent Student Teacher Conversations: 19 and 20 September 1:30 – 2.30 pm (Front of school foyer)

She has met with student groups from Year 8 and Year 9, and with the whole staff. This week she also met with a number of individuals, and with two smaller staff groups:

  1. Staff who have a key role in organizing camps at the moment
  2. Staff who have a long-term connection to Boho.

Don’t forget there is an online survey open to students, families, staff and Alumni – please click on this link: https://www.nhs.vic.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/boho-south-campus-consultation-process-flyer-dc4.0.pdf  and then find the survey link within this flyer (on the second page).

Our website link to the consultation process is https://www.nhs.vic.edu.au/about-us/school-council/ It is also on our Facebook page.

Success for our philosophy students

It was great to see our Philosophy Club participating in the Philosophon Competition last week. You can read about their experiences in this newsletter. Congratulations to our teams and thank you to Chris Fotinopolous and Elliot Wall who supported the students.

Student Consultation regarding the Mobile Phone Ban in 2020

I had the pleasure of working with the student Captains to discuss the 2020 implementation of the state-wide mobile phone ban introduced by the Minister for Education, James Merlino, MP. The Captains were asked to help us brainstorm the key communication and process requirements for a successful implementation here at Northcote. They looked at it from a student, staff and parent perspective and identified barriers and potential solutions.

The leadership team will use their ideas (and others) to assist in planning out and communicating our approach to implementation across the remainder of the year.

The current pattern of locker usage is one of the key barriers the Captains identified to successful implementation. Many students do not currently lock their lockers, even when there are valuables inside. I remind all students that they should use the locker they have been allocated and ensure it is locked with a school provided combination lock.
