Over the weekend of 24-25 of August, 3 of our Students ( Douglas Buckeridge, Archie Noakes and Niamh Tabit) competed in the 2019 Australian Cross Country Championships in NSW.
Competing in warm dry conditions with a temperature of around 26 degrees, was nice for spectators but not so great for competitors. Niamh ran the 4 km course and placed 7th in the under 16 age group which is two age groups up from hers. She was hoping for top 5 so she came close to her goal. She just missed out on 6th place which was taken by a New Zealander. Niamh was the 2nd Victorian over the line and the 3rd 14 year old across the line. The Victorian under 16 girls team placed 2nd overall out 7 states and New Zealand.
Archie Noakes placed 16th in the 14/15 year old boys 4k race, Doug Buckeridge placed 15th (13th Australian) in the 16/17 year old boys 6k race. I know it was a goal of Archie’s to qualify for this event. I think everyone will agree he well and truly smashed this goal. All three NHS runners finished as top 4 Victorian finishers in their respective races and were each part of Silver Medal winning Vic Teams.
Congratulations to all three runners. We couldn’t be prouder of what you have all achieved this year.
Thank you to Danielle and Sam Tabit and Duncan Buckeridge for keeping us updated with their successes.
Due to the overwhelming interest in Boys Basketball for the junior years, we once again held our NHS Yr 7 & 8 Boys Basketball tournament. This is a great opportunity to run a round-robin tournament to give all interested students a fun day out playing basketball, and to also allow selectors to pick teams for the up and coming Divisional Competition. The day was a huge success with 89 students competing. A big thank you to student coaches and referees Munroe Davis, Ryan Jamieson, Jordan Charles, Max Gurrisi and Connor Lester. Thank you also to our Staff Coaches Ms Lester and Mr Sullivan.
On Wednesday 14 August, our Year 8 Girls’ Netball team competed in the Regional competition at NETS Stadium Banyule. The girls were expertly coached and organised by their two year 10 coaches Emily Shell and Sophie Obst. Although the girls lost their first game, through hard work and determination they were able to rally and win the next two games giving themselves a slim chance of making the final, unfortunately, some results didn’t go our way and we missed out. I was really proud of the way the girls conducted themselves throughout the day showing great support for each other. Well done!

Congratulations to our Yr 8 Girls Badminton team who recently competed in the Regional Finals at Reservoir High School. The girls as always showed true team spirit and were great sports. Thank you to Mr O’Gorman for coaching the side.
The Year 7/8 boys Hockey team played off against Lalor Secondary College for a spot at the regional tournament. They came away with a win 4-0 with Matthew Bromley managing a hat trick from the backline. Star performances from the midfield group saw the team set some solid foundations to build on for regionals in term 4.

Congratulations to our Yr 9/10 Basketball teams who recently competed in the Divisional Competition at Coburg Stadium. NHS was well represented with 3 Boys teams and 1 Girls team. Our girls team coasted through the day by easily defeating Reservoir, Lalor and Lalor North. They now move through to play in the Regionals next term. In the Boys competition, our Northcote A were overall winners by defeating Thornbury. Possibly the highlight of the day was the match between Northcote B (yr 10’s) and Northcote C (Yr 9’s). This was a closely contested match coming down to just a one-point victory by the Yr9s over the Yr 10s. A big thank you to our Student coaches, Leo Mulqueeny and Cameron Ross and to our Staff Coaches, Ms Lester and Mr Sullivan
On Tuesday 27th August Jack Foenander, Matt Santoro, Yianni Syrbopoulos and Hugo Waples competed in Year 9/10 Division Table Tennis at Reservoir High School. This is the third year in a row the boys have represented Northcote, having also played as Year 7s and Year 8s.
There were five teams in the A section: Reservoir, Lalor, Northcote, Thornbury and Lalor North.
Our one and two players were Matt and Jack and our three and four were Hugo and Yianni.
Each boy played singles to best of three against the similarly ranked player in the other team and then each pair played doubles, also best of three.
The boys beat all four opposing teams six sets to love. In fact, the boys only dropped four games all day – one singles against each of Lalor and Thornbury and a singles and a doubles against Lalor North.
This means the boys are through to the next round which will be played next term. A great effort!
