From the Principal and Assistant Principal

Happy Birthday Beaumaris PS

Beaumaris PS opened on May 1st 1915 and this year we celebrate our 106th birthday.

We believe we offer a wonderful experience for our students during their primary years of schooling. School life has certainly changed over the years.

Below is a glimpse of some of the learning opportunities we provide, underpinned by our four school values:

Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Relationships.

Revisiting the state wide Department of Education and Training Priorities for 2021

As mentioned in an earlier newsletter this year, as result of the experience of 2020, the Department of Education and Training set the following common and core priorities for all schools for 2021:

1.Learning catch-up and extension

2.Happy, active and healthy kids

3.Connected schools

Priority Two: Happy, active and  healthy kids

How parents can help: Keeping your child active

A high priority is to get back outdoors, get active and get creative and look after the mental health of our students, your children. Physical activity boosts your child’s physical and mental health and helps improve their wellbeing. It also helps with concentration, memory and solving problems.

Keeping active is also a great way to support your child’s learning.

For ideas on how to keep your child active, visit: FUSE: Physical activity.

Healthy eating

Eating well is another way to maintain physical and mental health and wellbeing. Making lunches with your child can help to teach them healthy eating habits.

As much as possible, your child should be eating a wide variety of food, including:

  • vegetables
  • fruits
  • grains and cereal based foods
  • lean meat or protein alternatives
  • dairy foods
  • plenty of water.

For fun food related activities ideas which can be completed at home, visit the Department of Education and Training Website: FUSE: Fun with food: Activities.

The Australian Dietary Guidelines (February 2020) provide up-to-date advice about the amount and kinds of foods that we need to support good health and wellbeing.

Healthy dietary patterns and healthy food habits support good health and also help reduce the risk of chronic health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and obesity.

A Healthy Eating for Children Poster, including five guidelines for parents, recommendations regarding discretionary foods,  and healthy eating habits, is available at: https://www.eatforhealth.gov.au/sites/default/files/content/The%20Guidelines/n55f_children_brochure.pdf

2021 Student Attitudes to School Survey

We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing, and quality instruction, and we will be conducting a Department of Education and Training survey in Years 4, 5 and 6 to find out more about what your child thinks and how they feel about school.

The Attitudes to School Survey (AtoSS) is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist our school to gain an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Students will be asked about their thoughts and feelings in relation to their school, their learning, peer relationships, bullying and life in general.

Students from Years 4, 5 and 6 will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool.  It is important to note that we are not in any way “testing” your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any time.

Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used to link data for statistical and research purposes only. All responses to the survey are kept anonymous in the response file. Personal identification data will not be recorded in the survey response file. This ensures that the confidentiality of your child’s responses is protected at all times.

This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted here at school sometime between now and Friday 11th June. The survey takes around 20-45 minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class time.

The survey results will be reported back to the school in an aggregate form. All survey data that is made available in reports about cohorts of students only so that no individual student can be identified. Data suppression rules are used for schools with low student numbers per year level.

If you would like more information, please speak to your child’s teacher or visit: https://www2.education.vic.gov.au/pal/data-collection-surveys/guidance/attitudes-school-survey

Quote of the Week: Good Health

“To ensure good health: eat lightly, breathe deeply, live moderately, cultivate cheerfulness, and maintain an interest in life.”

Mindfulness

What are three things that went well for you today?

What are the best things that happened to you today?

Who are you most grateful for and why?

What are you looking forward to most about tomorrow?
