Book Week

Book Week is always a fun week at school. The 5/6 students thoroughly enjoyed checking out some of the shortlisted books. On Friday we finished off the week with a dress up day and The Blurbs performance. The costumes on Friday were BRILLIANT!

STEAM

This term the Grade 5 students are doing a Digital Design unit. The students have spent the first half of the term designing a name tag using 'tinkercad'. Our printer is currently working hard to print the 60 odd name tags at 40 odd minutes each! In the meantime, the students have spent some time experimenting within the program to create their own unique game or design.

The Grade 6 students have been doing an Electricity unit this term. The students have been working towards developing closed circuits as part of their design project. They have the choice of creating a steadiness tester, torch or fan.

Topic - Care for the Kids

Over the last few weeks, students have been investigating aid agencies whose goal is to help solve some of the problems that kids in our community, and all over the world, face in their daily lives.

Last week, we invited Sam Kane from Bendigo Foodshare to talk to us about how his agency helps kids and their families in our region. This has now inspired us to’ take action’ and look at ways in which our students can help support Bendigo Foodshare.

This week, students began working in small groups to come up with their own ideas to support Bendigo Foodshare. We look forward to hearing about what they come up with over the next two weeks.

Aaron, in 5/6 McClellan, had some books that he felt he no longer needed and wanted to give them to somebody else to enjoy. After listening to Sam on Wednesday, he decided that Bendigo Foodshare may be able help him to pass them. Aaron made a phone call to Bendigo Foodshare and they were only too happy to help out. Well done Aaron, we are so proud that we have students like you at Spring Gully who are thoughtful and want to help others.

Upcoming Fortnight

In English this fortnight we will be focusing on using quotations to support our thinking when reading. This CRAFT strategy highlights the importance of being able to identify specific elements from the text that lead to your understandings. We will also be continuing our great work with Information Reports. The students will spend the fortnight refining an information text that will make its way into our Grade 5/6 Encyclopedia!

In Mathematics, we are continuing our topic of Units of Measurement. The focus last week was on area and perimeter. This week and next is on volume, capacity and mass. Throughout Week 10, we will be working on a project to consolidate our understanding of Money and Measurement, our two most recent topics.
