Level Low Downs

Prep

This week the Preps have been practising our 'Cooperation' skills in our Wellbeing sessions. After discussing the different ways we could be a good team member and show cooperation, we had a series of class challenges to complete! We practised listening carefully to our peers, using our kind voices and helping one another. A highlight of this session was our human pretzel game and our human marble run challenge!

Year 1

The Year 1 Students have settled back into the school routines after the Winter break. We are learning to use writing prompts and scaffolds to help us structure our writing pieces. We are also focusing on when and where to use punctation correctly.

Year 2

Thank you for all your recent support for the loss of our precious friend and colleague, Sarah Foster. Our new arrangements are working wonderfully and our children are doing well. In circle time we have discussed loss as well as what we can do to support each other as a big Year 2 family.

In Maths, we are revisiting subtraction, shape and are continuing to develop our numeracy fluency. We are regularly working on Naplan questions so that our learners get used to the format and type of questions they will see next year.

In Literacy, we put on our creative hats after reading ‘Wombat Stew’, devising new recipes such as ‘Happiness Stew’.

For our science inquiry, we are exploring Forces. This is very exciting because it means we bring out the toys. Ms Wilson, Mrs Angelis, Miss Wilson and Ms Kearton have found a few treasures which are really old… (from their childhoods).

Year 3

The Year 3 cohort have had a settled and focussed start to the term.

We have spent time reflecting on our wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. We are looking forward to the many exciting experiences that will be happening during the term, the first of which will be our walk to the Native Nursey next Wednesday.

In Literacy, we will be exploring how to write informatively. We are enjoying learning how to structure paragraphs and make our writing more interesting to the reader.

In Maths, we will be heading outside this week to measure and explore the concepts of Area and Perimeter. We will also continue to focus on the automaticity of our multiplication facts.

The teachers have also enjoyed catching up with many families this week to discuss the progress of our amazing students. We are very proud of all the hard work that they have completed during the first semester and look forward to seeing how much they grow and learn, this semester.

Year 4

The Year 4 students have had a fantastic start to the term. They have begun a novel study on Nim’s Island and are working hard to improve their sentence fluency in writing. The science unit for Inquiry has been a huge success and the students have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Earth’s rotation and revolution, and how these cause night & day and the seasons. A highlight has been investigating ways humans have used the Sun, specifically to help them tell time. The students created their very own sundials and are learning that the experiment process is a very important aspect of science.

Year 5

Maths

We have started our term focusing on measurement. Students have been measuring using tape measures and rulers and have learnt to convert their measurements between millimetres, centimetres and kilometres. In groups, they measured different parts of their body and then created graphs to present their data.

Science

We have begun our Science inquiry unit for this term. Students have been conducting experiments on solids, liquids and gases and viscosity of liquids. They have been writing a hypothesis and reflecting on their findings.

Athletics training

A couple of mornings a week the Year 5s have been running laps of the school perimeter in preparation for our athletics carnival this term. They have already seen an improvement in how far they can run without stopping.

Upstanders

The Upstanders team have been working hard on organising and creating activities for the Jump Rope for Heart lunchtime club on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You can find the Upstanders outside The Pavilion in red vests to help you with your skipping.

Biodiversity

The Biodiversity Action Team harvested the rest of the broccoli in the kitchen garden and potted the cuttings of lavender and rosemary we propagated in Term 1.

We are looking forward to an action packed remainder of Term 3.

Year 6

This term the Year 6 students are learning about Civics and Citizenship. On Monday, 6H attended Parliament House where they participated in a roleplay, experiencing the law-making process first hand while they took on the roles of Speaker, Clerk, Serjeant-at-Arms, Premier, Leader of the Opposition and other members of Parliament. They also received a tour of Parliament House. The students should be very proud of themselves as we received fantastic feedback from the facilitator. He stated that they were one of the best school groups he had ever seen. He was very impressed with the student’s active engagement, reading and presentation skills. After lunch in the Parliament Gardens, the students enjoyed a short walk to the State Library where the explored the books and artefacts, including Ned Kelly’s original armour. 6B and 6M are looking forward to the excursion on Friday.
