This is Alessio, one of the Fire Carriers for 2023. As it’s coming to that time of the year AFL Grand Final, let's talk footy! There have been many great indigenous players like, Nicky Winmar, Michael Long, Eddie Betts, Cyril Rioli and Lance Franklin just to name a few but for this newsletter I will be talking about Adam Goodes.
Adam Goodes was born January 8 1980 in Wallaroo in South Australia, he is an Adnyamathanha man. Growing up Adam played Soccer, when he moved to Victoria there wasn’t a school team, so he started playing footy. At the age of 19 he was drafted to the Sydney Swans.
In Adam's first season of playing with the Swans in 1999, he won the Rising Star at the age of 19. Adam Goodes is a two time Brownlow medalist. He won it in 2003 and 2006. He won two Grand Finals with the Swans in 2005 and in 2012. In 2005 the same year he won his first Grand Final he was also a player for the All Australian Member of the indigenous team of the century. He played for the indigenous team four times. Adam Goodes played 17 seasons playing for the Sydney Swans, he scored 464 goals and played 378 games. He is the fifth leading goal scorer for Sydney Swans.
Adam Goodes was awarded Australian of the year in 2014. He was acknowledged for the work he has done to highlighting the issue of racism and helping young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
In 2015 he retired from the AFL due to racial slurs and booing. In 2019 the AFL issued an apology for not doing more after Adam received racial slurs. Adam acknowledged the apology but never returned to the AFL.
Adam Goodes started the Go Foundation with Michael O'Loughlin in 2009. They set up this foundation to help young indigenous kids to help them to go through primary school all the way to university. Empowering young people to receive an education so students can reach their full potential.
