Year Two
Dear Year Two Families,
It's hard to believe that the term is half finished already, isn't it? The students are already into full swing with their fourth Unit of Inquiry, exploring the Central Idea of "Where we are in Time and Place." There are so many exciting things happening around the school, with various fundraising and charity support activities, as well as programs to encourage care for our school environment ongoing.
Reading
The students have recently been engaging with the skill of developing questions as they read to support developing reading comprehension skills. The students developed sentence starters to support their practice of this skill. They developed questions to support their thinking and understanding before they read, while they are reading, and after they have finished reading a book.
The students have continued to engage with Reader's Theatre each Friday. The students of 2G watched video recordings of their performances to reflect on how they could improve their performances. They considered how they could use their different strengths as readers to effectively interpret, and then bring a script to life for an audience.
Writing
In writing, the students have continued exploring historical recounts. This past week, the students completed their poetry pre-assessments. It was impressive to see how creative our students were. They showed that they were able to creatively use their vocabulary and knowledge of poetic language and structural devices to entertain and engage a reading audience.
Mathematics
In their numeracy sessions, the students have begun to explore concepts of measurement, beginning with informal units. Following this they explored centimetre and metre units of distance before using their new understandings for problem-solving.
Inquiry
In inquiry, students shared their favourite toy or game with the class and were able to discuss their connection to it. This week the students researched how a toy or game of their choice has changed over time. They recorded their findings and used that information to develop a historical recount of facts and events. Concurrently they have begun to create a game of the future using the Scratch Jr. program on their iPads.
Assembly Awards
Congratulations to Andre Barata of 2F for being a communicator in achieving his reading goals, and Khevin Sharma of 2G for reflecting on his reading goals and making his writing significantly easier to interpret for his audience.
