Feast of Saint Mary Mackillop

On Tuesday, 8th August, St Francis Xavier celebrated the Feast of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop. Mary Helen Mackillop dedicated her life to God and took on the name “Mary of the Cross” at the age of twenty-four. She was an ordinary woman, with an extraordinary dream and a big heart. Her aim was to give the poorest families and most neglected children access to education and safe shelter by opening schools.

As a passionate educator and selfless figure, Mary experienced many challenges and hardships, giving up everything to live and teach amongst the people she served. She and the Sisters of Saint Joseph went wherever the need was greatest, and fiercely believed in the power of education to all children regardless of gender, race, faith or wealth.

Today, over 10 years on from the recognition of Mary Mackillop’s work, we continue to reflect on the qualities and actions that set Mary apart from others. Mary Mackillop works hard to ensure fair access to education for people who have the tools to realise their full potential.

This August, let’s walk in the footsteps of Australia’s most loved Saint.

Just like Mary MacKillop…

Let’s be fierce in the face of adversity.

Let’s be fair and act when we see injustice.

Let’s give love to those we encounter each day.

Together, let’s be Fierce for Fair.

Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - 15 August 2023

On Tuesday, 15th of August, the Church celebrates the Feast Day of the Assumption of Our Lady. This is one of the most important feast days of the year and a Holy Day of Obligation.

Mary was a strong, honourable woman, who was faithful to God in life. She spent her whole life serving God - being the Mother of Jesus, raising Him, believing in Him and was with Him at His death on the Cross. This Holy Day marks the occasion of the Virgin Mary being “assumed body and soul into heavenly glory”. The Assumption signals the end of Mary’s earthly life and marks her return to heaven to be reunited with Jesus. She is crowned as the Queen of Heaven and is seated at God's right hand. Mary takes care of the whole Church and everyone who asks for her help.

We will be having a whole school mass on Tuesday, 15th of August at 9:15 am to celebrate this significant feast day.
