Refugee Week Celebrations

Refugee Week this year is from June 18-24th, and the theme is “Finding Freedom”. In celebration of this, the Melton City Council held a celebration at the Community Hall on the 22nd.  A group of our Congolese girls were choreographed by Maua, a year 12 student. They performed 2 songs for the event and had a wonderful time.

It was so good. People were nice. They were so great! The food was delicious. The stories were very inspiring to me.

We enjoyed it. I loved performing. The girl who spoke about the refugee camp? That’s where I’m from. What she said to us, I really enjoyed it.

It was a good experience for us refugees because we appreciate the things that they do for us. A lot of things, from coming to Kenya to here, it was good to know their story. They’re very kind and we really appreciate the things they did.

It was a privilege that we are able to come into someone else’s land and immediately be embraced and to be able to show our culture.  It felt very exciting. I was nervous at first because I didn’t think they’d be very open, but once we were there, we saw how much they welcomed people and our culture and our differences, and it was great.

It was great. I loved it! I had a lot of fun. First, I was scared of performing in front of people, but now after having done it, I can say that I loved performing for them! I would definitely do it again. It would be a lot of fun and I’m so proud of myself!

Today was good. I liked how the woman, Yara, sang. The food was really good and yummy!  The salad was buzzing!
