35th Anniversary - Looking Back

During the early 1990s Nazareth College continued to see growth in student and staff numbers, while the building programme expanded to keep up with demand.

1990

  • The Student Representative Council (SRC) was established.
  • The four Houses were given names to go along with their colours - McAuley (Blue), MacKillop (Red), Chisholm (Gold) and Mannix (Green).
  • The school musical was 'Grease'.
  • Construction began on the F Block (McAuley area).
  • The fly-over theme was Amnesty International.

1991

  • Our pioneer students  reached Year 12.
  • The VCE was introduced in Victoria.
  • School Captains were Carmel Lonetti and Giovanni Sgarioto.
  • The Year 12s went on an orientation camp to Valley Homestead in Myrtleford, the same venue as their first camp in Year 7.
  • Chisholm won the House Swimming Carnival while MacKillop took out both the House Cross Country and House Athletics.
  • The Parents' Association continued to raise funds for the College, including more than $20,000.00 with the Sportsman's Night.
  • Nazareth Day had the theme 'A touch of Pink'.
  • The College Community mourned the passing of Year 8 student, David Cicerone, after an illness.
  • First College Dux - Carmel Lonetti.

1992

  • Construction of the D Block (McCormack area, Food Tech room etc) was completed.  The Library area was expanded.
  • The school musical was 'The Wizard of Oz'.
  • The theme of Nazareth Day was "Black and White'.
  • The Music Enrichment Programme was established with seven music tutors.  The College had a concert band, strings ensemble and orchestra.
  • The tradition of the Sock Hop continued in conjunction with St John's Regional College.  This was primarily a dance to raise funds for charity but there was also entertainment.  One of the acts was R&B group, CDB, which included Year 12 student Andrew De Silva as a member.

1993

  • Mr Terry Feely, Deputy Principal, bade farewell to Nazareth at the end of the year to become principal at St Peters College, Cranbourne.
  • Four staff members and 11 students took part in the Great South Australian Bike Ride.
  • The school production was 'Calamity Jane'.
  • Nazareth Day theme was 'Ugly Ties'.
  • Once again the Nazareth Community was in mourning after the passing of Year 11 student, Michelle Carson, due to illness.
  • The College commissioned Orchard Design Studio to create a sculpture of the Holy Family.  The sculpture was put up in the main foyer but these days can be seen in the Wheeler Auditorium.

1994

  • Ms Patricia Glover and Mr Andrew Walsh became the Deputy Principals
  • Our first group of students went on a cultural exchange and study tour to Japan.
  • The school production was 'For Art's Sake'.
  • The Nazareth Day theme was 'Sport'.
  • An astonishing 16 staff members applied for maternity leave - was there something in the water?
  • The College Environmental Action Group created a video to encourage students to pick up after themselves, especially on the school grounds.
  • Nazareth College students continued to support the wider community with activities such as assisting  with Meals on Wheels, donating non perishable food to St Vincent de Paul Society and raising funds for local charities.
  • The International Student Programme saw students from Hong Kong, Japan and Brazil study at Nazareth College.
