Arts and Technology News

We are presently all learning to cope with this very difficult and confusing time during the COVID-19 isolation. This has been a challenge for some of our practical subjects yet staff have been creative and supported our students in order to complete practical projects.
Staff have created material packs for many of our students to use to create practical projects. Thank you to parents for coming into school and picking up the packs for their children to learn at home.
Our Arts and Technology students have been busy creating some practical projects at home.
Technology subjects
The Year 8 Food Technology class are viewing a teacher video demonstration on Google Classroom each week of the recipe they would have cooked at school . Students have the opportunity to learn the skills and processes involved in creating the recipe. Students are provided with the recipe and can cook the recipe at home. Many students have done this and cooked some delicious food.
All of our Food Technology students have been encouraged to cook at home each week and keep a record of their cooking projects.
Year 11 Applied Computing class has been completing their Python programming work using online resources. They send their teacher screenshots of their work as they complete it.
Year 8 Wood - Obsolescence project. All of the games are designed to be recycled as well as entertaining.
Students have been given Wood packs with popsicle sticks and PVA glue. They will be required to construct projects using these materials at home.
The Year 12 Product Design and Technology (Textiles) students came into school to work this week on their Unit 3 Folios. It was very beneficial to be able to view their progress, discuss any concerns and consider the individual interests and possible Unit 4 direction.
Year 7 Textiles – Students have created sock creatures, using socks, buttons, stuffing and thread and needle and some creativity.
Year 9 Textiles – Students have been given cross stitch packs to complete remotely at home.
Year 11 VCAL Technology students all had to come up with an idea for a small mural that could beautify the College. Some have used recycled plastic lids screwed onto plywood. The others used buttons on canvas or plywood.
Visual Arts
Year 7 Art
Bird pictures are from Year 7 exploring textures in and around the house and using them as feathers in their artworks.
VCE Studio Art
This time at home has given Studio Art students a unique opportunity to explore a whole range of weird and wonderful art making techniques.
We have made our own paints and inks from common household ingredients and are currently in the process of creating sculptures out of recycled materials.
We are discovering that we don’t always need expensive materials and equipment to make beautiful art, just our imaginations.
Performing Arts
Year 9 Drama
As the finale to the Commedia Dell’arte unit students were given an existing script from one of the stock characters in the genre. They had the choice of performing it in a more minimalistic style or using new technologies such as greenscreen and sophisticated editing tools.
Year 10 Drama
In small groups students wrote a script based on Ancient Greek Tragedies of Euripides. Whilst they had the opportunity to perform part of their script as a monologue, most chose to portray multiple characters and employ full costume make-up and editing skills.
Music
Instrumental music lessons and musical ensembles are still running remotely via Zoom during Term 2. Well done to all of the students who are continuing to improve their musical skills and abilities with the guidance of our music tutors at Nazareth College.
Here are some of our students taking part in their weekly instrumental lessons with College Music Tutors Mr Paul Cornelius, Mr Thomas Stewart-Toner and Ms Xenia Zubenko
