Reflection

‘I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE’ (John 14:6)
In the Gospel Jesus tells His disciples he is preparing a place for them, He will come back to take them to where He is and that they know the way. Thomas says ‘Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?’ Jesus responds with the famous words. ‘I am the way, the truth and the life’.
It is good for us to take a few moments to sit with these words, reflect on them and allow them to penetrate our hearts. What do these words of Jesus say to us? Jesus is the way – the way to where? Jesus is the truth – the truth about what? Jesus is the life – what life?
I invite you to really take time and ponder these words and allow the Holy Spirit to move your response. It seems to me that Jesus is the way to follow here on earth, the way to joy, the way to meaning purpose and fullness of life. It seems to me that Jesus is the truth about life and about love; He shows us that love triumphs, that death does not have the last word. He also tells us the truth about who we are, that God made us, loves us, we are good but we are also wounded and we need the love and mercy of our Heavenly Father. He proclaims to us the truth that there is more to life than what we see and feel on earth. Jesus is the life – He is the way to eternal life, He tells us the truth about eternal life and how we have been created to live a life forever in the joy of God’s presence – here now and in heaven. He shows us the Risen Life.
As we look ahead at this time we are all asking ourselves questions about life, as we have been in this different mode of existence for a number of weeks now. We are all wondering what we need to change, how can/should we adjust our way of life after this time of being forced to be home? We are asking ourselves questions about vaccinations, the way ahead, what sort of life we are going to live etc.
Jesus comes to us in this space right where we are and says, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life’. As we look ahead, let us invite Jesus more deeply into our hearts and life. Let us ask Him to be to be with us, that we walk His way, that we hear and live His truth and we embrace the life He offers us. With this, we will have fullness of life.
