Year 6 Leadership Conference 2022

Student Voice and Agency

What a great start to the final year

Our annual Senior School Conference was held in the first week of school, with key guest speakers and team building workshops held for all of our Year 6 students. This event encourages our senior students to see themselves as role models, and gives them some information and inspiration to set challenging goals for themselves.  It is a fun event, capped off with a sausage sizzle lunch and a staff v students basketball match (staff were victorious yet again!).

Some reflections from our Year 6 students on the conference:

D.E.L.T.A.R with Mr Harris

In the morning we gathered in the gym.  After that,

Mr Harris gave us a speech on Determination, Empowerment, Life, Time, Attitude and Resilience which is an acronym for D.E.L.T.A.R.  After that he gave us a motivational speech and told us about the book he wrote.  We then got in groups of 2-4 and we wrote down what we want to achieve in life, as it boosts the chance of that happening by 80%!

Once we wrote down our goals we all gathered into a circle and said one thing that we want to achieve in life.  Mr Harris told us that even if there’s something that you don’t like, continue to do it and push yourself and always believe in yourself.

One of the many things I enjoyed on that day was learning that writing your goals down will boost the chance of the goal happening by 80%.

Cardinia Shire

In the morning, the Year 6’s were split up into two groups and my group first listened to someone from the Cardinia Shire.

All I’ll say is… What an hour!

We walked in and sat on the floor, straight away we got started with the learning.  We learnt so much about who we can contact if we are struggling with anything or just need some advice and we got to choose one friend to give a bracelet to.  There were 5 different choices of coloured bracelets, all meaning something different.  I got given purple which stands for kind, fun and loyal.

After that we got given a sheet with a hand on it, we got told to think about five people we would go to if we needed any help.  I chose my mum, dad, older brother, best friend and most of all my dog.

We also got a key chain, lollies and much more.  If I ever got asked to do the Cardinia Shire again, I 100% would.

Class Paper Challenge

On the Senior Student Conference day, we had a class paper challenge - it was about working as a teamand communicating.  The first challenge was making the longest line of paper with a paper plate.  Many groups in my class started at the top of the plate making a spiral then we stretched them out to see which was the longest.  Two teams were very close together in length but one was a little longer.

The next challenge was making a paper chain with a piece of A3 paper, scissors and tape. Some groups cut the paper in half then cut strips to make the chain, each group had 2 to 4 people.

The last challenge my class did was a paper plane challenge.  We made planes then made them fly to see which one flew the furthest.  I think everyone thought the challenges were really fun and great.

Mike Spears

Mike Spears is super enthusiastic about the positive benefits of sports and education.  He is an NBL basketball player who started out small and ended up making a change for a lot of children by encouraging them to chase their dreams.

What I got out of the session with Mike Spears is that we should never give up.  After that one hour with Mike Spears, I started being more productive and reminding myself of my goals each morning.  We learnt that there are some people in the world that hate on us. We learnt to let the haters hate and take them as a motivation to prove them wrong.

We also learnt that exercise is a good thing.  He taught us some basketball skills - we did push-ups and circles with our arms.

I know all the students would agree that we all had an amazing time with Mike Spears.

Students vs. Teachers Basketball Game

After a sausage sizzle, the students of Year 6 and some teachers, set out in the gym to play some basketball.  Students were looking forward to this ALL DAY.  The game was going to be refereed by Mike Spears!

The game started… Students were going SUPER well but then teachers took over.  The game was close and the scores were, 18 - students and 23 - teachers. The teacher’s won but all of the Year 6 students that participated gave it their all (not just because we are competitive).

We learnt some resilience and we have a memory that we can tell our families about for years to come.

The basketball match made my top 3 favourite things of that day!
