Senior Years News

Marie Clark

Welcome to Term One from the Senior School!

Our year 10, 11 and 12 students have settled into their 2022 academic programs very well, with a smooth start to the year.   2022 comes with some significant changes for the senior end of the school.  Following our school review in 2021, we have responded to feedback from students around the challenges associated with moving from Year 10 into Year 11.  To better prepare our Year 10 students and ensure they have the skills required to successfully move into the VCE or VCE Vocational Major in 2023, we have incorporated Year 10 into the Senior School, and aligned the assessment processes across Years 10, 11 and 12.

This means that Year 10 students will be assessed for each semester-based Year 10 unit as either ‘Satisfactory (S)’ or ‘Not-Satisfactory (N)’, and the units satisfactorily completed will support student transition into Year 11. Achieving an S for a Year 10 unit requires:

  • Exemplary attendance
  • Completion of required coursework tasks
  • Completion of common assessment tasks (CATs)

Year 10 teachers have provided students with unit outlines that clearly state what is required to achieve an S.

Along with changes in assessment, our Year 10 students are also now physically located in the Senior area of the school, with their lockers moved into the H-wing.  We are hoping to develop the area between the gym and the Senior School in 2022; there are plans to build a half basketball court and install a shade sail in that area.

Elevate Education

To support our VCE students, staff from Elevate Education visited the College during week one. They worked with the Year 11 and 12 VCE students on time management, creating study timetables, note-taking strategies and study skills.  Students responded really positively to the sessions.

VCAL

Our VCAL classes have started the year amazingly well, with positive feedback from all VCAL staff and the TAFE teachers. VCAL students attend school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for classes in literacy, numeracy, work-related skills and personal development skills.  They take a bus from MSC to TAFE Gippsland each Thursday, and are expected to engage in work placement each Friday.  Most students are now starting to arrange their work placement after completing required occupational health and safety modules.   A reminder that students need to get their paperwork signed by the employer and returned to school prior to starting the placement.

2022 Debutante Ball

2022 Deb training has started, and the students are settling into their training each Monday after school. The Deb is taking place on the 1st April at the Maffra Memorial Hall.  If anyone has questions or needs more information regarding the Deb, please contact Carol Caffrey on carol.caffrey@education.vic.gov.au
