International Day of Women in Science
In honour of celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls’ in Science (IDWGS), which was on Friday 11 February, the STEAM team organised and ran some fun and engaging activities for the school community.
At recess, there was a scavenger hunt set up around the school grounds, where students had the opportunity to find little info cards about famous women in science, and their amazing contributions. With the help of Ms Leong and the Robotics team, students were able to earn a sweet treat after answering a quiz question about their found scientist.
During lunch, we ran two water-themed activities, which interactively connected students of all year levels with the IDWGS theme ‘water unites us’. This theme is based on the idea that billions of people around the world cannot access safe drinking water.
For those in years 7 to 9, a practical opportunity was available, and they were challenged to attempt to create their own water filter, using different materials that would be accessible in real life. There were five different teams- countries Ethiopia, Cameroon, Australia, Fiji, and Indonesia, with each team ranging in the supplies they were given to replicate the difference in resource availability in each country.
Students aimed to produce a water filter which best decontaminated the dirty water they were given, and the winners were teams Ethiopia and Fiji- who produced the cleanest water! Well done to Shakeia Shaffer, Maddy O’Donoghue, Abi Brittain and Bridie Elliot who were a part of these teams.
In the JLC we ran a Kahoot where all the questions were related to this year’s water theme. Students who got into the top three got a prize! Congratulations to students code named Sophie, Viha and Jimbo! Thank you to Mia Cramond for making the water Kahoot!
Hope everyone enjoyed the day!
