Leader of Learning and Teaching

At MCC, it is not only our students that have begun the year engaging in learning. As educators, there is also an expectation that our staff will engage in ongoing professional learning and development.

Just like 2021, all of our staff have allocated Professional Learning Teams built into their timetable to work in small groups on College improvement initiatives. Already this year staff have engaged with the new NESA Principles of Professional Learning and have reflected, planned and created their own Professional Learning Goals for 2022.

In addition to this, Staff have used Wednesday afternoon Professional Learning Time to conduct audits on the teaching of Numeracy and Writing in all KLA areas, and to start to brainstorm possibilities as to how they can further engage students across the curriculum in these fundamental areas.

Staff will be allocated time in upcoming Professional Learning Team Sessions to collaborate, create and embed activities in their programs, targeted at improving students' application of Numeracy and writing in many different contexts, for it is here that true authentic and lifelong learning will occur.

I look forward to sharing with you further staff professional learning opportunities as the year progresses.

In Week 9, both our Year 7 and Year 9 students will participate in NAPLAN Online Practice Testing. The practice test is a trial run and key preparation activity for NAPLAN in May. It is not an assessment of student ability, and the tests will not be marked.

Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not recommended. Students can use the public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in NAPLAN.

We ask that all students in Year 7 and 9 bring their own headphones (ideally non-bluetooth) on both Wednesday March 23rd and Thursday March 24. Students will also need their laptops fully charged on these days.

If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact your child’s Pastoral Leader or myself.

Yours in learning,

Damien Herb
