The VCAL students of 2022 have had a strong start to the year, gaining momentum and showing their competency for each of their Learning Outcomes across a variety of subject strands.

Our Year 11 students, new to the VCAL course, have been learning about the certificate and the requirements needed.  Students are really taking ownership of their learning and showing a sense of community and camaraderie, as demonstrated by their creation of the classroom communications board, where they designed the presentation of student profiles, which include their VET course, hobbies, strengths and quotes they like to live by.  This helps to build a sense of team and lets other students know about the amazing skills our VCALs are developing along their journey.

Our Year 12 students were given the opportunity to be part of a marketing opportunity for the well-known business “Carpet Court”.  Students were part of their engaging presentation providing information on the carpet laying business including benefits, income and course requirements.

Students were then asked to make a promotion video for Carpet Court. This task allowed students to demonstrate competency in outcomes for Literacy and Personal Development Skills.  Three students (Joshua Ferro, Ashley Palmer and Paris Guariglia) created a short engaging Tik Tok video which has been chosen by the company to be included on their website to promote carpet laying to students across Victoria.

We’ve had a strong start to 2022 after two years of disrupted education and we are excited for what’s to come including the VCAL sleep over in Term 2, multiple short courses for our year 12’s and excursions for the whole VCAL cohort.

In VCAL we’ve been doing tasks like work placement, personal development, and safety/ skill development. The whole idea of VCAL has been a great way to have students prepared for what they want to do in the future.  We all agree that the idea of going to school for 3 days, TAFE for one and work experience for the other, is an extremely beneficial 2 year start for all of us to bring us closer to what we want to do In the future. As of right now we are all deciding on activities we would like to do further in the year to increase our skills and knowledge, and we all look forward to doing it.

John Jukoff and Joshua Ferro- Year 12 VCAL Students

On 15th February we had an incursion with Carpet Court. They came in and introduced us to the different pathways that we could take through the industry and the different types of pay you can get with the pathway you choose. We were shown the different types of carpets and floorboards they sold and installed at their sites.

On the day we did multiple activities, one of them being a Kahoot to see what we know about the industry. We also needed to make an advertisement video in groups using the TikTok app.  This was fun and engaging for us all.  We learnt that the reason they came to talk to use about their industry is because the industry doesn’t have enough exposure and that they need more apprentices.

Overall, we really enjoyed the day.  It was a fun experience learning about the industry and the incursion got us thinking about if this could be an option for a pathway for us in the future.
