Numeracy

Paul Colvin - Science Technology and Numeracy Coordinator

This year the college introduced a new subject at Years 7 and 8 called Scimat.  This subject is a combination of Mathematics and Science and shows students the sorts of connections that exist between the two.  The Year 7’s have been focusing on reviewing basic arithmetical concepts and lab safety.  Meanwhile, the Year 8’s have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes and factors such as area, volume and surface area and creating 3D shapes of their own.  They are now taking what they have learned and applying it to the planets and creating a scaled representation of the solar system.

How many different 3D shapes can you see in these student creations?

The select entry Accelerated Maths Program is running again this year.  Students that have been identified via independent testing or staff recommendation will be given the opportunity to complete an abbreviated Maths program for their current year level, allowing them ample opportunity to complete work and advance the skills and understanding usually developed in later years.  Participating in such a program offers these select students the chance to undertake a highly individualised course that will see them with an advantage leading into their Senior Years at the college.
