PDHPE News

Our Year 10 students were out and about this week in both PASS and PDHPE.

In Year 10 PDHPE students are looking at sporting opportunities in the community, one being lawn bowls. Each Year 10 PDHPE class took to the greens and tried their luck at a range of lawn bowls activities, working out the perfect speed and the right bias to win each round!  Thanks to Stuart and the Moama Bowling Club for providing this opportunity to our students.

Year 10 PASS classes have also been busy this week, coaching our Primary Students in Athletics. This was a great opportunity for both our Primary and Secondary students to work together and get to know each other, creating stronger connections across a range of year levels.

Love Bites Program in the Secondary School

On Tuesday 22 March, the Year 11s attended the Love Bites program, facilitated by Kirsty Turner and Emily Flanigan, the school’s two Social Workers. We started the day by learning about relationship violence. We watched an eye-opening video of the story of a teenage girl called Angela and the violence within her relationship with a young adult called Dale. The social workers, Kirsty and Emily, taught us about the 9 types of violence and the 3 stages within the cycle of violence. There was an activity where we were given a sentence and we had to decide whether the opinion or action was ok or not ok. We then had an open discussion to hear multiple perspectives.

In session 2, we discussed sex and relationships. After sharing qualities of our ideal partners, Kirsty and Emily debunked some unwritten rules of sex. Next, we learnt about consent, different ways to ask for consent, different ways consent is or isn’t given and Kirsty and Emily shared some statistics on sexual assault and relationship violence. Similar to session 1, there was an activity where we were given a sentence and we had to decide whether we agreed or disagreed, followed by an open discussion to understand multiple perspectives. We watched a video on the impact of bystanders on stopping sexual assault. This led to a discussion on the effect and responsibilities of bystanders.

For session 3, we split into groups and worked on advocating against relationship violence and advocating for consent. Our year level made posters, paintings, bumper stickers and even a rap song, illustrating the importance of consent and other key information we had learnt during the sessions. We finished the day by presenting our creations to the rest of the year level.

There was a lot to take away from the Love Bites program. It was a thought-provoking day that had an overall positive impact on our year level. Thank you to Kirsty Turner and Emily Flanigan for running this event for us.

White Card Training

On Monday, 20 Year 10 students worked with an external trainer from Coastal OH&S to learn about safe work practices on a Construction Site. The students were exposed to a variety of different types of possible accidents on a worksite to allow them to think about safety factors which could be applied to avoid such accidents. In doing this and other activities they have been made aware of the basic work, health and safety requirements for going onto a worksite. These students have all achieved the nationally recognised unit and will receive their Construction White card in the coming weeks. They will get to apply their knowledge when they go onto worksites for Work Placement or Work Experience later this year.
