From the Senior School Sports Master

Following the cancellation of the Senior Swimming Carnival last week, we have managed to secure a backup date next Monday 7 March.  Again, this will be a whole Senior School event.  We will send an amended instruction sheet to you all shortly. An update on the status of the Carnival will be posted on the College App on Monday morning at 6.30 am following a facility risk assessment.

As we move in to a new phase of the COVID-19 response with restrictions easing in a number of ways, we are yet to receive an updated set of protocols from each of our opposition schools. These will be published on Friday through the College App for your information.

Mr Matt Stearn - Senior School Sports Master

Senior Swimming Squad

Next Wednesday the squad will be travelling to SOPAC to compete in the ISA Carnival. The team list is on the Student Noticeboard. The bus will be leaving the College at 7.30 am and will be returning at approximately 4.00 pm. Lunch will be provided for the boys. Warm-up is at 8.30 am, with the first race commencing at 9.00 am. All swimmers must do a RAHT before school on Wednesday morning. If a student on the team becomes COVID positive in the coming week please notify me as soon as possible as there have been provisions made in the event of this occurring.

Each swimmer should have the College Swimming t-shirt on and wear closed-toe shoes. No thongs. Swimming t-shirts can be purchased from the Uniform Shop. Senior students must be wearing their Senior uniform. Students can swim in their own costumes (preferably blue or black)  and must be wearing the school swimming cap. Swimmers can have one spectator who should sit in the back row of our seating allocation at the pool. All students, teachers and spectators are expected to follow the COVID-19 protocols in place on the day.

Training continues from 7.15 am – 8.15 am at Fitness First Chatswood this Friday and concludes next Tuesday 8 March.

NOTE: There will be no training on Monday 7 March due to the College Swimming Carnival.

ISA Representative Cricket

Four members of the College 1st XI cricket team represented the combined ISA team against GPS last Wednesday at Oxford Falls. Unfortunately for Logan Nicey, Charlie Sharp, Keelan Mendel and Joel Austin, the match was severely affected by the weather and only three overs were possible. This was despite the incredible efforts of the SPX Ground Staff, Mr Ronnie Noort and Mr Trent Willoughby, who earned the praise of all present.

All four cricketers trialled for the CIS team on Monday this week at the Norm O’Neill Cricket Centre in Penshurst. Charlie and Keelan were successful in being asked back on Tuesday for the final selection trial. Weather permitting, the boys will play for ISA against an ISA Barbarians XI at Bradman Oval in Bowral this coming Sunday. We congratulate them and wish them all the best.

Mr Pat Rodgers - ISA Coach 2022

Strength and Conditioning Sessions at the Sarto Gym

Monday Strictly Year 10-12

Tuesday Strictly Year 7- 9

Wednesday Training open to Year 7-12

Thursday Training open to Year 7-12

Friday Training open to Year 7-12

Students must book their training time slot through the Mind Body App which can be found on the school's Intranet page. A reminder due to COVID-19 restrictions and gym safety, a maximum of 20 students are permitted to train during each session. If students are unable to reserve a position on the Mind Body App, it means the time slot is full and they will be placed on a waiting list. If students have reserved a spot and are unable to make their booked session, they MUST cancel on the app to allow the waitlisted students an opportunity to train.  A reminder the Sarto Gym is a phone free environment and students must bring their own sweat towel.

Please contact Ms Coombe for any further information.

Ms Laura Coombe - Strength and Conditioning Convenor

Senior Chess

Chess training continues on Monday afternoons in D1-4 “the Blue Room” at 3.30 pm - 4.30 pm. All students who are interested in playing Chess as their extracurricular activity are encouraged to attend.

Ms Denise Ramsey and Ms Janelle Dempsey - Chess Convenors

CSDA Public Speaking

The CSDA Public Speaking Competition Round 1 was held last Friday on Zoom. Our amazing Public Speakers presented brilliantly but we did not move through to the Finals event. Feedback from our students (Years 7-12) was that the speakers who did move to the next round knew their speeches so well!  Possibly a hint for us to get our speeches done earlier so that we are more familiar with our presentations. The CSDA Executive did highlight that there were double the number of students participating this year—possibly the Zoom event enables more students to participate in this competition.

CSDA Debating Competition

The CSDA Debating Competition runs through Term 2 on the following evenings.  YELLOW CSDA Debating ONLY Registration forms need to be completed and dropped into the box on the student verandah asap.  Debaters will need to meet at the clock after our Sports Assembly this Friday.

The 2022 Debating season kicks off this term with:

Week 7 Training:  Friday 18 March 3.30 pm - 5.30 pm

Week 8 Training:  Friday 25 March 3.30 pm - 5.30 pm

Week 9 Training:  Friday 1 April 3.30 pm - 5.30 pm.  Please note our pre-season 'Friendly' Debate has been cancelled.

If you want to be part of the terrific St Pius X College debating community it is essential that you attend ALL of the first six rounds.  If your team makes it through to the Elimination round (and beyond) you also need to keep the above dates free.

Our senior students act as coaches/supporters for our junior teams.  We are also lucky enough to have ex-students to work with the junior teams as the younger students really enjoy contact with our ex-debating “champions”.

The fee for the CSDA extra-curricular activity is $150.00 which will be included in your Term Two school fees. We keep our fees as low as possible and receive funding from the St Pius X College P & F to subsidise the costs of running debating at SPX.

Mrs Michele Waterson - Debating and Public Speaking Convenor

Cross Country
