College Chapel Mass

I

Shrove Tuesday

In preparation for our fasting, it has been a tradition in the Catholic Church to use up all the cooking fat and feast on the day before the season of Lent. This has translated to a contemporary context of cooking pancakes, or celebrating Pancake Tuesday. Through the support of the Maintenance staff, Mrs Anna Coombs, the Edmund Rice Society, along with Ms Lee and Mr Balboa, prepared, cooked and sold pancakes on Tuesday to commence our fund raising efforts for Caritas’ Project Compassion Appeal. Over $400 was raised, and this gave our almsgiving for those on the margins a much needed kick start that we will add to during homerooms each day of Lent.

Ash Wednesday

Unlike our Commencement Mass where we came together as a whole school community, Ash Wednesday was marked by year group liturgies held in various locations around the College. The young men had the message of Ash Wednesday reinforced through scripture and prayers that Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. By considering others and removing from our life that which prevents us from being in communion with God is for us all to prepare ourselves for the greatest mystery of our faith – the resurrection celebrated on Easter Sunday.

Students were made aware that giving up a tokenistic part of our lives such as chocolate or soft drink meant nothing unless we considered how this affected those around us. Perhaps rather than give something up, we could take something up such as extra work around the house to assist family members.

Project Compassion Lenten Appeal

Through Lent each homeroom will be asked to contribute to our annual Project Compassion Appeal. Our donations provide us with a tangible way in which to live our faith by assisting those most in need. In previous years our donations to Caritas have helped those on the margins lead more dignified lives by providing: health care, education, sanitation and access to clean drinking water. While many of us now lead cashless lives, preferring electronic transfers, all students are encouraged to donate to our efforts to “give to the poor in handfuls” so that we can be authentic to our vision and mission here at St. Pius X College. The link to Caritas for you to donate, receive a tax invoice and have your donation added to the contribution made by the College is below.
