Principal's Notes

March 25th 2022

Dear Parents and Families,

Harmony Day

What Is Harmony Day?

Harmony Day is celebrated every year on 21st of March. It celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. Harmony Day is about including, respecting and appreciating the stories, traditions and cultures of all people who call Australia home. Harmony Day provides all Australians, both young and old, with an opportunity to stand against racism, cultural intolerance and hatred. It is a day where Australia, as a nation, says: “Everyone is welcome. Everyone belongs.”

Why not use Harmony Week as an opportunity to share more about your own cultural background with your children.

This week all our students have traced around their hand to make a shared display. Our senior students shared qualities on their hands that demonstrated how special and unique they are as well.  "HANDS UP FOR BEING DIFFERENT. EVERYONE WELCOME. EVERYONE BELONGS HERE!'

Harmony day really fits in with our current blitz of 'Saying Nice Things'. All three classes have been working on building positive relationships with each other and learning about positive self-talk when things can be challenging.  We have been concentrating on giving and receiving compliments too.

Staffing Announcement

We are very pleased to announce that Mrs Rachel Huf has been appointed as our Music Teacher for the remainder of the year. She will be teaching on a Tuesday morning. Thank you to Mrs Garland for being our Music teacher in Term 1.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Thank you to all parents and families for attending the parent teacher interviews on Wednesday night. Well done to our Year 4, 5 and 6 students who shared their learning goals, achievements and showcased samples of their class work to their parents.

SGSSA Athletics Carnival

Next Tuesday is the Inter-school athletics day at Pedrina Park for Years 3 to 6. Students will be bringing a note home today with all the details. Please read the note carefully and if you have any questions contact the school on 5574 2282. All students need to be at Pedrina Park by 9am for a 9.15am sharp start. If there is a cancellation due to weather, messages will be sent via email and to the parents WhatsApp group. If this happens, it will become a normal school day for Years 3 to 6.

Victorian High-Ability Program

Congratulations to Hughie Price, Darcy Shipcott and Lexi Thomas for being selected in next terms intake for the Victorian High Ability Program for English.  The criteria for selection is through previous NAPLAN testing results. The students will have weekly online sessions with a teacher from the Virtual School and are expected to complete homework tasks for each lesson.  Mrs Bell will also be supporting these students as part of her tutoring role.

Welcome Breakfast

We are happy to announce that we will be having a welcome breakfast next Thursday 31st March.  We haven't been able to hold this for a while due to Covid, so it will be great to have all our families at school.  The breakfast will be held outside under the undercover area where we hold assemblies.  Students and their family are encouraged to attend from 8am onwards.  Parents Club will be supplying the brekky.  Some helpers would be appreciated for heating up pancakes, cooking toast and with the BBQ.

Lions Club paper truck loading

The Cavendish Lions Club are having another paper loading morning on Sunday 27th March at the old railway shed.  Any help that you can give from about 9:30 - 11:30ish would be much appreciated.

Have a lovely long weekend,

Lisa Ferrier
