Physical Education
Term 1 is a fast-paced time of year within Health and Physical Education, with many exciting events scheduled including the Twilight Sports - a highlight for our school community - and a six-day intensive swimming program for all students at Swim World. The years 4-6 students will participate in the intra-school Athletics Day which leads into the inter-school competition later in the term, as well as the Syndal District Summer Sport Round Robin for all Year Sixes.
Prep
This term, students will discuss what it means to be respectful in Physical Education. They will develop their understanding of expectations and how to establish and maintain a respectful learning community where everybody feels confident and comfortable to express themselves. Students will participate in learning tasks which encourage the use of movement patterns within defined areas. Spatial awareness will be required for students to successfully navigate around others inside the designated playing area. They will also begin to develop the correct technique to throw, roll and catch a ball. They will explore elements of movement through a range of throwing and catching tasks both individually and collaboratively.
Year 1 and 2
This term, students will combine basic movement skills to explore the effect they have on others through a variety of tagging/evading games. Spatial awareness will be further developed as students are placed into situations which require quick thinking and decision making in response to external stimuli. Students will also develop the fundamental motor skills of catching and throwing (rolling and stopping) through a range of hand-eye coordination learning tasks. We will then work towards transferring these learnt skills into various contexts.
Year 3 and 4
This term, students will be introduced to the basic techniques required to perform shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump and high jump. We will discuss the rules for each event and learn to identify the key components of successfully performing each skill. Students will also focus on the Fundamental Motor Skills of throwing and catching, applying them in a variety of game situations. They will also spend time exploring their decision making skills by testing alternative outcomes through the use of force, space and different techniques to suit the learning task.
Year 5 and 6
Students will be spending the first half of this term developing their skills in preparation for the upcoming Athletics Carnivals. As part of a unit on Athletics, they will be working on practising previously learnt skills and refining their movement sequences in shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump and high jump. Students will also be developing many skills common to sport, physical activity and games through participation in a variety of minor games. These include physical skills such as throwing and catching, kicking and striking. This will be done through the use of increasingly complex learning tasks where strategic thinking and decision making skills will be a focus.
