What's happening in the Library?

Year 7 Get Caught Reading!

During Term 1, all of year 7 have been participating in our Get Caught Reading program, which uses the Accelerated Reader platform to build reading and comprehension skills. Each student has a reading target to achieve, and these are celebrated each term.

At the end of Term 1, eighteen students attended a Pizza Party to celebrate meeting or exceeding their reading points targets. Some students exceeded their points targets by over 1000%!!! Well done!

The students are: Damchoe Dendup, Paige Proctor, Makaylah Heagney, Daniel Donaldson, Luke Rees, Jack Clayton, Helene Groger, Yolanda Hao, Brooke Hellyar, William Alexander-Tolhurst, Hunter Armstrong, Kaitlyn Smith, Polly Toovey, Alexis Vickery, Tommy Walker, Chelsea Webb, Ariana Wood and Dezi Suddaby.

We are looking forward to an even bigger Pizza Party next term, when more Year 7 students meet or exceed their points targets! See the attached parent information flyer for more details about this program.

We love reading books - but remember the library also encourages other activities. Look at the activities below:

  • Tuesday Lunchtimes – Chess Club in the library - everyone is welcome to come to area 3 and join in the games and mini chess puzzles.
  • A variety of popular board games available for use every recess and lunch
  • We also offer e-books and audiobooks, so your reading enjoyment never needs to end!
  • CLICKVIEW - we often forget we can use our Student login to access wonderful films and documentaries on Clickview at home.
  • Access to the latest technology with a 3D Printer, Laser cutter and Cricut machine in our Makerspace area.

The Library staff have had a super busy start to the term preparing for many events forthcoming.

Save the date - Game Changer Challenge Day Tuesday 17th May.

Every year ASC enters the Department of Education's Game Changer Challenge.  Now in its fifth year, this state wide competition encourages students to use design thinking to come up with creative solutions to real world problems. Teams are put through their paces to create a 60 second video answering the challenge question. Successful teams then progress through to regional finals and, if victorious there, have the chance to win an all-expenses trip to Sydney to compete in the Ultimate finals! Students interested can still enter at the library.

Chess News

The ASC chess team travelled to Tamworth late last term to compete against Calrossy in the NSW Junior Chess League competition. ASC won this round, 3 matches to 1, and now come up against McCarthy Catholic College in round 2 to be played in the coming weeks.

On Friday 20th May ASC will host the Sydney Academy of Chess Interschool Challenge, where schools from the region have the opportunity to compete against each other in a 7 round Swiss competition. There are still some vacant places for the ASC team in this event so see the Library staff ASAP if you're interested.

Booked In! Children's Literature Festival

On Tuesday 24th May award winning illustrator Sami Bayly will be coming to ASC to speak with students about her amazing career in the publishing industry. If you're unfamiliar with Sami Bayly's work, you can read more about it on her website (http://www.samibayly.com/). This is an amazing opportunity and spaces are filling quick so don't miss out!
