TOBA Winter Sports Day - Brendan Ryan ('91) Cup 

The forecast for heavy rain didn’t discourage the commitment and enthusiasm of stalwats as players and supporters turned up to the Winter Sports Day.

We were delighted to see the trophies namesake Brendan Ryan (’91) arrive to catch up with mates and assist with presentations.

TOBA was triumphant overall, with wins across in Cross Country, Hockey, Rugby and Soccer.  TC won the Football for the first time since 2012.

The medal for TC Spirit was presented to Adrian Di Carlo (’89) by the inaugural winner, Bryan Breheny ('04).  Adrian is a true TC stalwart – an Old Boy, current parent, TOBA Executive Committee Secretary and long-time contributor to TC and TOBA.  Adrian competed in the TOBA soccer team against his son, Anton.

Special mention to Adrian Cantwell (’84) who was TOBA’s oldest competitor on the day, competing in the Cross Country.

The TOBA football team remembered their mates, Justin Little (’92) and Tristan Berentsen (’91) who are no longer with us but loved playing at this day.

Class of 1952 and 1947 – 70th and 75th Anniversary Reunion

On Wednesday a special anniversary reunion was held for the Class of 1952 and 1947 – this was to acknowledge 70 and 75 years since leaving their beloved CBC, Perth.

It was fitting that the celebration was held at the Firewater Grille, Duxton Hotel on the old CBC, Perth site.

Attendees included Max Stidworthy (’52), Br Basil Hickey (’52) and Gerry Chesson (’47).

The group shared many memories of their school days, from war time, to sport, teachers, mates and some of the mischief they got up to at school.  A most enjoyable afternoon shared with three very special gentlemen. 

Tom Barnes ('18)

Tom Barnes (wrestling) grew up playing Australian football, rugby union and rowing at TC before turning to wrestling after attending an introductory class at Fremantle PCYC. He loved it from the start and in Birmingham, the 21-year-old will contest the 97kg as the youngest member of the wrestling team. 

Tom represented Australia at the Cadet World Championships in 2016, 2017 and 2018 – finishing 16th in Croatia in 2018 – and was the only Australian wrestler selected for the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires where he finished 5th in the boys’ under 110kg. He also claimed junior Oceania titles in 2017 and 2018 and at the 2019 titles, he won the 97kg junior division and was runner-up in 97kg senior division. Barnes went to the Africa and Oceania Olympic qualifiers in Tunisia in April 2021, where he finished 5th and claimed the 2022 Australian title in the 97kg weight division in May, paving the way for his Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham.
